The best Indian delivery for our location. Perhaps it only deserves 4 stars, but i give it the 5th one just for being in my area. The Chicken Karahi is my favorite; tender meat and killer spices. The lamb samosas are a unique treat too. UPDATE: Whaaah! They stopped delivering to my area. We miss you Al Hamra! Hire some more drivers, and come back.

My husband loves coming to this place! I must admit that this place is good too, however my palate makes me sensitive to spice. I only go to fix my husbands cravings. We always order the garlic and cheese naan bread. 2 orders! And the lamb and vegetarian samosas. He loves the chicken tikka masala and the shrimp birayani. We ask for less spicy so I can have some too! The waitstaff are super nice too! They make you feel welcome!! It makes us feel special when they see us come in and already know what we want to order!!

Consistently good Pakistani-Indian food. What i love about this place is that they take debit/credit with no minimum. Most curry dishes and a naan will be $10. I guess in SF desi places love just recooking old curry. The chicken in my chicken tikka masala was just chicken kabab pieces mixed with the salan (curry). Their grilled items are really good, I do wish it was a bit more spicier. Several times a month you'll see it randomly packed for someone's bday or company party. Plus point is that its one block away from 16th St BART so when the coma hits, you're on your way home.

love the spices they use in the tandoori, masala and the aloo gobhi so good and so cheap the place is clean and you can definitely eat there but i always order to go great overlooked spot

The lamb samosas are so good! The sauces are perfectly matched for them too. The wraps are tasty too. You can request it without onions. It's basically curry, mixed with rice, wrapped in a naan. I have yet to find a good butter chicken or makhani murgh in San Francisco. Anyone know of a place? The one from here was not creamy enough and was just spice without too much flavor even though we requested mild (I love spicy food but have heart burn issues) The delivery is always fast. About the health rating below, the link doesn't work anymore and I went and checked it out. It's not as bad as some popular pizza places in the city and the score isn't that terrible. Maybe they've cleaned up their act which I'm happy to hear because I really enjoy these dishes.

So I placed an order for delivery at around 4:22 pm. The driver came at around 5:10. I ordered the food off of grub hub. Most of the food is really spicy hot! My bill for everything was around $22.(pretty good for so many things) The raita is really small and more on the creamy rather than the sweet side, and most of it takes up space from the carrots and pickles inside of it. I ordered a kheer but they were all out and so they called me and asked if they could give me a samosa instead, it was good but way over spicy, I ate almost the whole thing except for the outer shell. The Mango Lhassi is more on the creamy side rather than the sweet side. I ordered naan with keema, I thought it was just cheese but it wasn't so gave it to a friend to eat rather than myself. The main dish I ordered was a very heavily coated thick covered mixed of vegetables(vegetarian Korma) So spicy I couldn't eat the whole thing. Lastly The sweet nan: I usually order plain nan but today I ordered this and the keema for a change, the naan is more on the dry side and isn't to sweet , but just sweet to the bite. I probably won't be ordering from here again, not because the food isn't any good, nor because of poor service(delivery driver fast, friendly, waiter over the phone was polite and got my order ready) but because the food is just too spicy for my taste. But if you are the type of person who likes...loves spicy food, then this is the place for you, try it and I'm sure you'll like it.

Just ordered delivery. The curries were pretty tasty- flavorful, not greasy, very tender lamb, well spiced cauliflower and potatoes. BUT the naan was awful! It definitely wasn't fresh, tasted and looked like it was baked a while ago then pulled from the back of the freezer and reheated. It was hard and left an odd aftertaste. And the rice didn't seem fresh either. It had burned chunks that must have been scraped from the bottom of the pot. The sad thing is that the naan and rice make the meal which is why I'm only giving 2 stars otherwise I'd give 3.5. Bad quality control

I've the same thing a bunch of times (for delivery) Lamb Samosa Chicken Makhani Mutter Paneer and either garlic or aloo naan Gotta say, everything except the Naan is perfect, just perfect. Just perfect. Samosa is flavorful. Chicken is tender (better than tikka masala, b/c makhani is apparently dark meat). Mutter paneer is a little on the rich side, and just a hint of sweetness. The naan is fine, but gerts a little mushy side. To be expected, I guess.

This was only my second time having Indian food and it was underwhelming. I came here on a Friday night around 8pm and the restaurant was pretty empty with only two other parties. We grabbed a table and looked over the menu. The restaurant offered all the standard menu items that most Indian restaurants offer. We ordered Tikka Masala, Tandori Chicken Leg, Nan, and a side of Seasoned Rice. The tikka masala barely had any flavor. The Tandori chicken was juicy, but really spicy outside. The nan was typical and the rice just tasted like plain basmati rice with no seasoning. The restaurant was dingy and run down. The bathroom was in worse condition. With dim lighting and dirty walls, I couldn't wait to get out of there. I would not come back here again.

What I like about this quaint little place - is the humble and amicable owner and servers , and the wonderful chicken biryani. The latter took me onto a nostalgia trip, those days of Eid and the wonderfully spiced deliciously aromatic biryani at my Muslim friend's house. S ad I walked in one afternoon , and was warmly greeted by the owner and then by the cook cum server. Given the fact that S is a regular there lead to a warmer welcome and much welcomed customizations to the dishes we ordered. Between the two of us, we ordered for a Chicken Boti tandoori, a cheese chilli Naan (epic hot cheese stuffed bread topped with chillis) , chicken kadhai and a chicken biryani. All this for only $31. Delightfully value for money. In a summary, wonderful spices, an open kitchen which allows you to see your food being cooked ...while you gaze out of the restaurant at the busy Mission street crowd passing by. Pay by the counter and slip the tips (if you paying cash) through the cup next to the billing register and it falls through the hole into the collection box below. A quick smiling good bye to the folks, and off we go with tummies and hearts full, with a promise to come back for the chicken biryani.

Don't be fooled by the somewhat shabby storefront. This place has some really delicious food. And for that matter, I kind of like the sauces and everything simmering in the front window. The inside is decorated a little bit like a shrine to the Giants, which is a little odd for an Indian restaurant but not odd for the area. We went in for a little dinner one night and tried the Lamb Biryani and one of the vegetarian curries. Both were really excellent: flavorful, sufficiently spicy, and filling. I liked how the biryani was premixed with delicious rice in a nice proportion to leave it a bit moist. The portions were quite large as well, so we left more than satisfied. The Mango Lassi was also very flavorful and not too sweet. This place is really nearby and I think we'll be going back.

Really solid Indian food and a great price. We ordered chicken tikka and shrimp curry, veggie samosas and rice. Everything was wonderful. Delivery took a little long though but I would order again.

Why is this place rated so low ?! This place is crackin ! The food is bomb, tastes just like my moms home cooking ! Pakwan down the street is OVERHYPED. The few guys that work here have great customer service, they are nice and keep your water filled. The food is cooked really fast. The food here is AUTHENTIC. I ordered many things here like seekh kabob, chicken biryani, chicken tikka, chana masala, daal, and garlic naan.. Everything was good, and reminds me of home. Dont let the 2.5 star rating fool you, this place is legit ! Come come !

We wanted to grab an easy dinner somewhere nearby and I thought Indian might be a nice change. We had an early dinner a little before 6PM and they said we could sit anywhere we wanted. Food: I ordered the chicken tikka masala. Standard fare. Amongst the three of us (two guys and myself), we got one order of rice, garlic naan, and the cheese naan. The rice was as expected. The garlic naan was pretty good. The cheese naan was also pretty good, but I couldn't get over the fact that it tasted like eating a quesadilla. My food was good, but not spicy at all. I finished all the chicken and sopped up some of the curry with the rice and naan. Definitely filling, but I didn't overstuff myself and try to finish the rest of the curry. The guys finished their plates and the remainder of the rice and naan and seemed satisfied. Service: Friendly and efficient. What more can you ask for? Cost: Each of our main dishes was around $9-10 and the naan ran about $2.50. Not too bad for a quick, tasty dinner! Would I return? Maybe. But let's face it, unless it rocks my socks, the Mission has too many other places to try before I go on repeat.

I have been eating here since 2008. I appreciate that the curries have been consistently excellent and for it's humble atmosphere. The owner and staff give your eating experience a warm and hospitable glow. Our typical order: Chicken Tikka Masala,Chicken Vindaloo , Aloo Palak , Seek Kabab, and if we want left overs...Chicken Boti Tikka. If my husband chicken's out, he orders the lchar Ghosht (lamb).

had take out twice from this hole in the wall place but didn't experience any indigestion. Vindaloo was pretty flavorful and tasty and the spinach/chick pea curry which was decent. Guys are nice; service was pretty fast.

My Son and I just stopped in because we are in our venture to try different foods from different cultures. We love it . The fish curry was yum and the chicken burrito My Son had was awesome. Had I known it was BYOB. I would've bought my own wine. I'll know for next time.

I come to al-Hamra at least once a week. I love, love this place. All of the guys working in the restaurant are great, they all provide great customer service. The food is delicious. I usually order the same things: Chicken Karahi, white Bismati rice, and Naan. My ultimate favorite dishes here are Chicken Biryani, Beef and Chicken Kabob, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chana Masala, and the Vegetarian Samosas. Oh, and the Kheer is, also, delicious! I have been to many Pakistani-Indian restaurants in San Francisco and I will tell you this no matter how many places I try I will continue to come to al-Hamra. Every time I want a friend to try the best Pakistani food and have great service I bring them to al-Hamra. ....just typing about this great place and food has me wanting al-Hamra!

I'm a stylish American; as such have been pretending to like soccer since 2004. SO after PRIDE I needed a place to watch Costa Rica Vs. Greece and satisfy my hunger. I've been to Alhamra several times and this time was less thrilling than usual but I still have faith so hence 4 stars. TO GET: -lamb biryani -Tandoori Chicken -basically I think the key is order MEAT -garlic naan TO SKIP: -saag paneer: spinach tasted a little past it's prime -veggie korma: I think Korma should have a hint of sweetness and instead this had a hint of bitter AND it was too spicy (but I'm a wimp, granted) The PRICES are the draw. SO SO CHEAP. Huge space that's not busy so you can bring groups. Family owned and operated. Really friendly, low-key service. A great deal and pretty solid food.

Don't expect nice decor, but be ready to wow your palate. My favorite Indian food I've had. Before the Alhambra I was always ordering tandoori in Indian restaurant and everything else I've tried was too heavy on spices, so I couldn't eat Indian more than once a month. And now it became one of my favorite foods to eat. Alhambra makes it right! Each dish is perfectly balanced. Chicken tikka masala $9.99 is a must. Lamb korma $9.99 my another favorite dish to order, soft lamb cooked in creamy sauce. Naan is really good $2.50 my favorite with cheese or cheese and chili. Last time I went there I tried their Tandoori fish/file sole $8.99 so flaky and soft and perfectly seasoned, served on a bed of onions in sizzling plater, caramelized onions compliment the fish very nicely. They don't serve alcohol. BYOB. Service very fast, friendly and welcoming.

The decent health score lured me to put in an order for my friend and I. Not the greatest Pakistani-Indian I've ever tried, but close... Chicken Tikka Masala is on hit, my taste buds felt like they were dancing with joy! Decent serving although could've been a little more volume wise. My only complaint is I wish their Gosht Vindaloo (Lamb Vindaloo) was much more spicier. Despite their advertisement saying it's "hot & spicy",actually it is not,it is medium spicy(boo), and I noted I wanted extra spicy dammit! While it does have a little bit of spice in it and an interesting flavor, fiery and sinus clearing it ain't. When I want vindaloo I want it to be scorching, not mild!!!! Desserts are interesting but not the cheesecake kind of stuff you would be used to. Cheap sodas however compared to other places. Three and a half star rating from me...

The best Indian food I've had in the mission. The chicken korma, tikka masala and lamb saag are amazing and be sure to try the mango lassi!

I went for lunch. For $13 including tax, I got a lunch special that included a nice variety of delicious Indian dishes, including chicken tikka masala, some sort of dhaal, potatos, rice, naan, and papadum. Everything tasted great. It isn't a very classy joint, but that's not how I like my Indian restaurants anyway!

  • Denise C.

My Indian vegetarian friend comes here to get curries. I have had the curries and they are decent. I feel like you can make curry like this at home. I'd love to come into the restaurant and sit down for some other dishes than the curry I tried. I got a mango lassi too and it was good. BTW: This is my #420 review in San Francisco, so to that go do something wild!

We had a birthday party here on a Saturday. The staff were extremely courteous in our planning beforehand, and accommodated us without a fuss as we grew numbers from 15 to nearly 40 people. The food was served promptly and in courses - Samosas first followed by entrees. They did a great job of distributing food evenly amongst the tables. The food, as always, is delicious -- the seekh kebab, chicken boti, lentils and chana masala were excellent. They helped us set up a stand for a birthday cake and even played drums while we sang Happy Birthday. I can recommend Al Hamra without hesitation -- especially for parties/large groups.

Excellent service and the food is always delicious. The owner and his boys always take extra care of me and I have waited until eating there 5 times before I made this review. 5 stars every single time! You will not be disappointed with Al Hamra!

Orange crush. Completely artificial: bevreview.com/2004/12/13… Completely authentic: Tandoori chicken breast cooked to an orange-hued perfection with slices of grilled onions, sweet homemade mango chutney and a huge slice of naan. All for just $8. All crushed in no time.

Most horrible experience ever. The food caused me poisoning. I placed an order with them on eat24 for tandoori chicken breast, garlic naan and saag panner . What I got was chicken legs , plain saag and paneer replaced with Tofu. I contacted eat24 to cancel my order and look into it. The restaurant offered to give 5$ credit for their mistake. I DID NOT want a 5$ credit but wanted my correct order to be delivered If that wasn't the worst part, the tofu was completely stale and caused me food poisoning the next day. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!

Lived near here for several years but never tried it. Now that I moved away, Al Hamra was on Check, Please, so I had to go back to the hood to see why everyone on the show raved about the food. Simple: it's the best naan I've ever eaten, the best Tikka Masala in the City, and the Spicy Lamb Curry is one of the best things I've eaten in my entire life. Well, maybe that's an exaggeration, but it's pretty frickin' delicious. I'll be back whenever possible. Good chai, too.

Came cause I saw this place on Check Please, Bay Area. It definitely did not disappoint...I chose to stick with the recommended dishes but what I really wanted to try was the Chicken Kofta (but couldn't find it on the menu! Sadface!) Nonetheless the food was excellent and very filling even though at first look, it doesn't seem that much. Started the meal off with vegetarian samosas. They were fried nicely and chocked full of potatoes and curry flavor. Crunchy and a little spicy, a good opener. We wanted to try the lamb samosas, but were sadly informed they didn't have any. As for the mains, we stayed on the safe side and tried both the chicken tandoori and chicken tikka masala. Both were good, but I found the tandoori to be a little dry. The chicken tikka masala came with an ample amount of sauce that was perfect for dipping with the naan - tried the plain, garlic, and onion - garlic being my favorite. We also tried the lamb briyani...that was super good. Slightly different from other briyanis I've had prior, but definitely seasoned well and had a good spicy kick to it. I can still savor the flavors....

I dropped in here for a tasty, quick bite, and I'm always up for a good hole-in-the-wall restaurant. But I left as soon as they put down the water pitcher. It looked like it had NEVER been washed. I am not a neat freak in the slightest (own a German shepherd who sheds like crazy), but I wasn't eating anywhere where they have that much dirt and residue on something and felt like it was okay to still use.

I think this is the first review I've ever written on Yelp. I forget. Regardless, I don't really ever find the motivation to write reviews. I'm a total Yelp Mooch. All you reviewers out there - for all you are, I love each and every one of you. THIS place. This place got me to speak my mind. Me and a group of friends (#WNFD) come here every Wednesday night for a "family dinner" (figure out the acronym yet?). I'm pretty terrible at keeping any regularly scheduled engagement - why do the same thing again when you can try something different? But week after week, I find myself at the same place, the same time, every Wednesday night. Part of it is the people. Most of it is the food. (JK love you guys) I'm a pretty obnoxious Indian Food snob. I grew up on my Mom's cooking, and very few places can even come closer, even fewer can do it better. Most Indian restaurants in America, especially the ones loved by non-Indians, drown their food in butter and oil and starve their food of any spices. They focus too much of their energy on the presentation and not enough on the food itself. There's also something very wrong to me about paying $3 for a slice of naan. Alhamra doesn't fall victim to any of these traps. The food is cheap, it's deliciously spiced, and the cooks don't rely on a keg of butter to make it taste good. The place itself is completely no thrills - complete dive of a restaurant. The kitchen itself is wide open and right in front of you. But all of that is in part what makes it so great. Come here if you want a taste of what it's like to visit someone's home in India or Pakistan. Be ready to eat, be ready to feel the burn, and be ready to have plenty of cash left over for post dinner bar hopping. Today is Tuesday which sucks because it means it's not Wednesday. I can't wait for tomorrow night.

Why have i never tried this place before?!?! I called in an order on the phone and the guy was easy to talk to and polite. Picking up was just as easy. the staff seams to enjoy their jobs which is cool. The food, though? Hella good! Chicken Vindaloo was awesome, Aloo Gobi was also good. The Chicken Tikka Masala, though, was the highlight. Everything was pretty spicy, and super fresh tasting. Not too oily. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna eat my Kheer.

Delicious "no nonsense" indo/Pakistani food and great service. Not a fancy decor but their excellent service with a smile makes up for that. Their chicken tandoori is nice and moist. Love their samosa with the green sauce. They probably have one of the best daal I've ever had

Love this joint. The goat curry rocks. Tasty rice and tea. The staff have a kind of relaxed, no-rush attitude, but once they attend to you you're in good hands. A nice oasis from the craziness & gross nastiness of the 16th & Mission BART station area, or as I call it, 16th & Ebola. I always eat here when in the Mission. Has always been consistently good.

The best Indian food ever. The samosas are leagues beyond samosa I've ever had, & I've had some good ones. The vegetarian korma was wonderful & the chicken tikka masala must have had drugs in it, judging by the orgasmic bliss it induced in us. Jasmine rice = perfect compliment/perfect by itself. Delicious delicious delicious! The people are incredibly awesome too! Here's us with one of them, drifting in the happiness of delectablility.

This is my goto place. Let's see... - chicken biryani rocks - any vindaloo rocks - channa masala rocks - channa daal rocks - lamb curry rocks (from what friends tell me) - any tikka masala will be good - chai ROCKS ! Best I've had in town - roti is great - must be more though I'm mostly veggie (other veggie dishes are so so)

We love Alhamra -- so much we come here almost weekly! The best part about Alhamra is Krishna, the fabulous waiter, cook, and cashier. We always order some combination of Chicken Tikka Masala, Mutter Paneer, and/or Aloo Gobi, with rice and of course Naan! In addition to the fabulous service we receive from Krishna and the other staff, the owner is super friendly and takes pride in knowing his customers. He always greets us by name and with a smile! Best Indian/Pakistani food I've ever had!

Best Indian food in the city! I've seen multiple friends bring their Indian parents and they all approve. The staff are so nice. They are super accommodating for groups. We make it a weekly event. Also it is BYOB and there are liquor stores on the block. The place is so chill and I love the atmosphere. Great place to have a party or just come with a friend after work.

Fantastic North Indian/Pakistani food in the mission--not too oily and full of flavor. The quality is magnificent, but even better is the price. Wonderful value in a casual atmosphere. No reservations needed, the service is friendly and the food comes quick. Now if I could only find a bigger belt...

We're so disappointed. Most Indian resturants are good, some great. After recieving a flyer at our home, we gave it a shot. Everything was so watered down! The vindaloo barley had lamb in it and in honesty, was more like a soup. I don't like writing negative reviews to family owned resturants, but this was below average. Perhaps the storm made our curries and yogurt watered down during delivery, but at close to $50 for three items, naan, and tip, I can't give it another shot. Too bad, I wanted to like this place.

    (1)
  • Naomi L.

Friendliest Indian spot in the Mission, hands down. These guys are the best at dishing out a great variety of North Indian food - and they're super quick, too. Reasonable prices, good atmosphere, and you can't get better service!

  • An u.

For under $10 bucks you can't beat Alhamra biryani, they use succulent fresh thigh meat making it much better choice than dry breast meats. Their samosa pastry is very good! However, potato stuffing can use a little flavor boost. For bread avoid the usual and order Keema-Cheese naan! It's better than most other Indian joint in the mission area. Amber Dhara is an exception, as they have an excellent Keema naan of their own but it's pricey! If I am in a mood to feast I order I will order jalfrezi, kadhai chicken and occasionally lamb curry with plain rice. pretty good meal!

  • Noel M.

It was the Sag Paneer that really won me over. It seems to be rare to find a place that actually uses more spinach than filler for this dish. It was pretty oily though. My veggie intake has been on the low end so I also ordered the Vegetarian Korma. The spicy bell pepper, potato, pea, and green bean mix really hit the spot. Be warned the entrees do not come with rice and I could have passed on the naan. It didn't take long for it to dry out and become cracker like.

Everyone makes bad decisions. My life has been a series of 'em. One after another. We can go ahead and add dining at Alhamra to the list. Now, don't read this wrong, I am not having a pity party, I am simply stating the facts and am 100% okay with that. I ordered the Vegetable Biryani along with an order of Saag Aloo at the counter when I walked in. I was hungry, cold and in somewhat of a hurry to get to school. I waited around ten minutes for the order, while I sat in their dining area, that reminded me of a dining area at a truck stop back in the day, when they were the last place on earth you would want to have a picnic. The environment was surrounded with men, and the little 13" box T.V. sitting on the counter top behind me was blasting. I should have known right then and there it was going to be bad, but hey, sometimes hole-in-the-wall places can be surprisingly delightful. My dishes were brought out by one of their staff and I ate up, not even thinking once more about it. This was enough for two people, so I had the rest packed up. An hour later.... UGHHH EWWWEE... Blah. My stomach is aching. Was it something I ate? Oh yeah... That sketchy Alhamra place around the corner! The rest of the food tossed. That's enough for me, folks. Never going back. :-(

Terrible. Had delivery from here and the best part was the rice. Dry, overcooked naan. Dry paneer in sag paneer. Chicken korma super watery. No chutneys. Will definitely not order from here again. I'm left hungry and wanting a take-back.

I saw this place on PBS (KQED) and thought I would give it a shot. Thing is, I live in the East Bay, so it was very much a matter of evaluating the potential returns on making the trip. Luckily, it was summer and I had infinite free time. Expecting a casual yet classy restaurant, Alhamra embraced more of the former. Not a problem; the food is all that matters. I went and sat at a table that wouldn't inconvenience a larger party. -1 star for the apron and tray that was left there. The customer eating area is not meant for those, no exceptions. I ordered plain naan, chicken curry, rice and a Coke. Let me tell you, ordering the Coke was not the best thing to accompany this dish as it does nothing to quench the spiciness. The curry is delightfully spicy but not eye-watering as I have experienced in the past. My Indian friend once told me that the food is only good if you're crying while eating it. Having a big appetite, I'm fine that criterion wasn't met. The portion size was just right, if not stuffing. The chicken comes with ample sauce to spread over the rice and naan; I ended up making tacos out of the lot. For the price I paid, I'm satisfied over all. I want to try their other naan preparations next time. However, can I find places like this without taking the BART? Definitely. Great job advertising, though.

Ordered here multiple times off EAT24 app. Food is consistently very flavorful. They generally give more curry than other locations. The lamb and potato samosas are good. Naan is ok. Solid Indian food spot that has earned my repeat orders.

One of the best chais in the city (other than making at home :) ), reasonably strong. Spinach daal was good. If you ask for spicy they make it spicy. Staff was friendly, they were also showing the cricket world cup

If you're looking for good Indian street food, look no further! Don't be put off by the fact that it's a block away from 16th+mission and the neighborhood is pretty sketchy, especially at night. Al Hamra is arguably a little sketchy itself, but in a good way, I think. They serve authentic indian street food --- so they aught to look the part a little. Food was cheap and delicious. Can't ask for more.

Hmmm...I've always liked Indian food, but it was either too expensive for what it was...or it's cheap and it tastes that way. Alhamra appears to be the exception. I found out about this place after seeing it on t.v. as it was featured on a local show about bay area restaurants. First thing I noticed as I perused the menu was how reasonably priced everything was compared to this other more upscale Indian restaurant in the haight neighborhood of S.F., the restaurant itself was low key but clean and a little busy when i arrived. For my party of 2 we ordered the Shrimp Tikka Masala just to break away from the typical "chicken" Tikka Masala...the Naan looked tasty so we ordered 3 or 4 pieces, one of which had a sweet coconut flavor...and of course, a 1/2 tandoori chicken. Everything was great! The sweet Naan was something different but was really good. The Tikka Masala was so good and flavorful i was mopping up the bowl with my Naan. The tandoori chicken was also well cooked and flavorful. Good prices and tasty food...I'll definitely be back.

Meh, not too impressed. The dishes lacked flavor and texture. The bread was good, though.

One of the most authentic Pakistani places in the city, you can smell the delicious aromas wafting out of the restaurant from blocks away, setting your salivary glands to "drool". Convenient location in the Mission, but this place, surprisingly, is never crowded. The owners are always there, so the food is consistently delicious, with the spices spot-on. They are super friendly too, and always wave when I walk by. My favorite dishes are the baingan bharta (eggplant, perfectly smoky), seekh kebab, chicken Achar, and of course the garlic naan. Some of the lentil specials are particularly delicious as well. I had never considered having party there, but a friend recently did, and it was great, no waiting, and plenty of food for all. When it was time to sing Happy Birthday, one of the staff busted out a Dhol (drum) and the birthday girls danced, everyone was having a great time. Of course, this is also the perfect place to grab some takeout, and I believe they are on GrubHub for those lazy types. Affordable, authentic, delicious, friendly, and in a great location, what's not to love?

I really like this place. I've been coming here for over 2 years and can't say a bad thing about it. I highly recommend the chicken tikka masala. Super tasty lost of sauce. To make the dish stand out even more order yourself some house rice and cheesy naan. It's amazing. Staff is uber friendly and accommodating. This is a must try in the Mission.

My first time here I was ordering the tandoori half chicken which was great. I ordered it every time. But then I discovered the chicken tikka masala and stuck with that as my usual order to this day. I recommend having their rice to go with it.

This is far and away the best Indian food in San Francisco. As a native San Franciscan, I have been eating Indian food all over town for 15 years. Yes, I've tried Pakwan. Al Hamra is better in every way. Fluffy, fresh naan...heavenly! Flavorful, cheap dishes (+1 for the Chicken Tikka Masala, Tandoori fish, mango lassi, Lamb Korma, and virtually everything else on the menu)...best value for money in the city! Another important consideration is the "can do," flexible, and positive attitude that is the order of the day at Al Hamra. Want to bring your bicycle inside rather than lock it up and risk a painful theft? No problem, ever! Want to bring a case of your favorite beer (Pliny, perchance?), a magnum of your favorite wine, or the fixings for your favorite cocktails and pay no corkage whatsoever? No problem at Al Hamra! Want to take over half of the restaurant and have either a formal prom dinner, or a liquor-soaked Gatsby-esque soirée? No problem for Al Hamra! Want to talk/watch 49ers or Giants with the die-hard local sports fan owner? No problem with Al Hamra! Over the course of 15 years of faithful patronage, I've experienced nothing but positive vibes and a refreshing sense of fun that I've often found frustratingly lacking at some of SF's "hipper" restaurants. Some dubious Yelpers knock off stars for the "mediocre service." However, the service is actually great if you give it a chance. Don't be alarmed if there is a small language barrier; instead, revel in the incredible diversity this city has (for now) and rest assured that you will be well taken care of. Contrast that to the non-service at Pakwan, and it's no contest for me. If you value quality, heart, and price over pomp and circumstance, Al Hamra is the place for you. If you love authentic Northern Indian/Pakistani food (according to friends from India, Al Hamra is the best Indian food that they have found in the Bay Area), Al Hamra is the place for you. If you're looking for a great place to eat and drink for cheap with easy access to Bart and the Mission's nightlife, Al Hamra is the place for you. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough - I'd give it 6 stars were it possible! Go as soon as you can; you will not regret it.

No, just no. The people are slightly rude and complacent and the food is not that great. In fact, it was kind of bad. Get Indian food at one of the better places on Valencia. Udupi Palace is decent. I asked for my butter chicken to be made spicy. It was very mild, and not spicy at all. I absolutely loathe when Indian places take one look at my blonde hair and disregard my request for spicy food. I can handle it guys! Making assumptions about me is not cool at all. I can forgive them for their attitude because they have to deal with the worst of the worst in that location. Y'all should move to a new location!

My family orders food from Alhamra every week. We love the Chicken Vindaloo and Chicken Saag. The staff is casual and friendly and always helpful. They have gone the extra mile several times to get our orders right. The tandoori chicken is also delicious. I can't imagine a week going by without having some Alhamra.

Ah, another recommendation from "Check, Please! Bay Area" has swayed Jamie W. and me to come to the Mission to give it a try. It's an easy jaunt on BART since it's a half-block away from the 16th Street station. Gee, we must have passed by it a hundred times without noticing it. Praise was unanimous on the show, and so when we saw the sandwich board beckoning us, we went inside. My, it's a mighty spartan-looking place, and we looked around for a table without dirty dishes on them. We finally found one that just needed to be wiped down. There's lots of good stuff on the laminated menu. I first ordered a $3.99 Tandoori Chicken Leg on a bed of fried onions (see photo). Tasty, tender and sizzling hot. The $7.99 Lamb Korma was velvety smooth and sweet, especially good atop the jasmine rice and with the $2.50 bagel-like Onion Kulcha (see photo). The best dish of the evening was the $7.99 Lamb Bindi, hearty chunks of braised lamb mixed with okra, onions, herbs and spices (see photo). It was all quite filling and for what we tried, true to the praise. There isn't that much more to say about the place except to say that we certainly are more likely to come back here than go to Amber. It's more or less the same quality South Asian food you find at Pakwan up the block or at Shalimar, Lahore Karahi, or Chutney in the Tenderloin. They appear to do a robust to-go business, which may not be a bad idea considering that the place gets crowded quickly with big families and baby buggies. FOOD - 4 stars...nothing fancy but really hearty Indian dishes well executed with little fuss AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...thrown together like it was an afterthought SERVICE - 3 stars...a bit automatic and awfully quiet...except for the gregarious owner TOTAL - 4 stars...worth a return visit for the bargain prices and good, family-style food

Ordered in on a very rainy night, boy was I surprised. Delivery was on time with a smile. The food was outstanding! I had the Chicken Masala and the lamb and cheese nan...delicious! The basmati rice was cooked perfectly and the yogurt mango was dreamy. Everything was fresh and tasty....can't say enough good things about the food or the reasonable price. Thanks Al Hamra!

(See pics) Review #1209. This is one of my absolute Indian places and if there is one dish you must order, it's the goat curry. It's flavorful and the meat was very tender. I pretty much order it every other time I visit here! Lunch combo is great with a few different choices and it comes with rice. Love the service here for both lunch and dinner. It's relaxing and you can enjoy some excellent conversations with the not too busy vibe.

The food here is not very good. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, saag paneer (spinach and cheese), some naan and some rice. I've had better chicken tikka masala. This one tasted too peppery or ... harsh. Definitely not as milky or as creamy as other ones that I've had. It's not that good. The saag paneer was gross. It was very tasteless yet spicy. SOOOO SPICY. It had one jalapeno in it..and that killed me. Esepcially the next day. I had severe heartburn or stomach burn from what I think was the saag paneer. I tried to get some saag paneer so I could get some veggies into my diet! The portions are huge and the saag paneer was cheap. It was about $7. The chicken tikka masala was $10. WTF That's expensive. It's indian food. I thought indian food and curry in general was supposed to be cheap food... Well not around here, and not at this place. I probably wouldn't pay that much for the chicken. I'd maybe pay $8-$9 max. The naan was good..but I've never had naan that was bad. Parking is a beast here. Just take public transportation or walk. My friend illegally parked. Please. Don't be like us. Don't illegally park just to get your hand on some indian food.. The guy that was cooking up the food/taking the order was nice. He was trying to talk to me even though there was a HUUUUGE language barrier. I still have no idea what he said. I think I laughed and nodded my head quite a few times. Who knows what he was asking me. But I still appreciate the effort. He mentioned he was nepalese...so if there's only one nepalese guy and you're the boss reading it..maybe commend him on what a friendly guy he is! Food still sucks though! I think I had better food in my college campuses fast food Indian. Mmm.. I could have gotten a combo of saag paneer and chicken tikka masala for under $8. I never knew how spoiled I was until now.

    1. Easy to order via Grubhub.com . 2. I was borderline on the rating. There was a real mix of positives and negatives. In the end, the order inaccuracies kept me from providing a 3 star rating. 3. Chicken Vindaloo - This was not very flavorful. The sauce was watery. There wasn't very much chicken. The chicken was tender and the potatoes were cooked well. tinyurl.com/3cqw8ra 4. Vegetable Pakora - These were crispy nuggets of goodness. 5. Vegetable Samosa - Due to the packing, these were room temperature and had lost any crispness they might of had when they were prepared. The consistency of the filling was good but it was also bland. 6. Garlic Naan - Due to the packing, the naan was cold. There was very little garlic. 7. Packing - The vindaloo was well packed in an easy to reseal plastic container. The rice was neatly packed in a Chinese carry-out container. The naan was just placed in an unsealed bag. It was cold. The same was true for the samosas. The pakora was similarly stored but had held some of its heat. 8. Order Minimum - Relatively low ($15) 9. Price - Their prices are very good. One of the more affordable Indian restaurants in San Francisco. 1 Chicken Vindaloo $ 8.99 1 Vegetable Samosa (2) $ 3.00 3 Soft Drinks $ 3.75 1 Garlic Nan $ 2.50 1 Vegetable Pakora $ 3.00 Subtotal $21.24 Tax $2.02 Total $23.26 10. Order Inaccuracies - I ordered three Sprites. Only one was delivered. I ordered one order (2 pieces) of Vegetable Samosa. I received two orders (4 pieces). 11. Delivery - My order was logged at 5:47 PM with an estimated delivery time of 6:37 pm. The delivery was made at 6:27 PM. Total delivery time - 40 minutes. The delivery person was professional and polite. There is no charge for delivery. 12. Overall, the food was mediocre and inconsistent. For quality of food, there are numerous options that provide better Indian food for delivery. However, their low cost and delivery minimum do provide one of the more affordable options for Indian food delivery.

This place is the best. Not only is the food really high quality and delicious, but they crew who works here is fantastic. I've been going with a large group of friends almost weekly for well over a year and these guys treat us like family. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality of the food and ambiance is great: comfortable seats, adequate lighting, TV that shows local sports games, low ambient noise (except maybe when we are there...), and friendly/fun staff. Oh, and it's BYOB.

Tasteless disappointment. Saw this place on 'Check Please Bay Area'. Couldn't tell that the stuffed nan had been stuffed with anything at all yet it costs 3 times as much as the regular nan. The lamb and chicken entrees were tasteless except for some heat. The Vegetable Pakora app were overcooked? Couldn't tell what vegetable they were and were also tasteless. Just tasted liked soggy fried dough. The Raita(Homemade yogurt and cucumber) was more like water than yogurt. Ordered delivery via Eat24: Item Price Qty Sum Vegetable Pakora $3.00 1 $3.00 Sweet Nan $2.00 1 $2.00 Keema Nan $3.00 1 $3.00 Bindi Ghost $10.99 1 $10.99 Chicken Tikka Masala $9.99 1 $9.99 Raita $1.00 1 $1.00 Subtotal: $29.98 Tip: $4.89 Tax: $2.62 Order Total: $37.49

If you are looking for amazing tandoori meats and fish, this is the place to go! I've been dining at Alhamra for the past few years and I can't say enough great things about the food or the wonderful employees! The tandoori fish is absolutely the best in the city, no doubt about it. It's seasoned perfectly and served on a steaming bed of onions. The tandoori lamb chops are also amazing! And don't forget the delicious curries! Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves amazing Indian food!!!!

My wife and I are regulars at Alhamra (6yrs+) and we love it. We love the food here especially the Tandoori Chicken,Nans and Aloo Mutter.., yummy :). I know is not a fancy restaurant but that is one of the many reasons we love this place because it make us feel at home :) with no fancy people around trying to impress, so if you want to keep it simple, authentic and don't want to break the bank this is the place for you, (and of course if you want to enjoy some yummy family/style Indian/Pakistani food). Everyone is friendly and if you need anything don't be afraid to ask..,

My first time at Alhamra was for Wednesday Night Family Dinner's (WNFD) first birthday. I was only relatively hungry but could not help gorging myself on dishes of chicken, lamb and beef. And the naan. Dear God, the naan. I woke up this morning dreaming of that naan. Better than the food, was the wonderful attitude this small place dealt with the crowd of people who took over their restaurant. They just keep bringing out the food with smiles and more of that delicious naan. We ordered everything on the menu so I can guarantee a great meal no matter what you order. Looking forward to another Wednesday soon!

Cheap Indian Food. Barely anyone there when we arrived around 1.30pm. The food was pretty good. I ordered the Sag Paner -spinach cooked delicately with cheese, herbs and spices................. 6.99 - It was flavorful and mashed well with the naan. I wish there were more pieces of "cheese." Cheese is in quotes because it tasted more like tofu. The guy in charge was funny. It was a nice experience but I probably won't be returning.

Every week, a group of friends and I head to Al-Hamra for our "Wednesday Night Family Dinner". We arrive in little clusters, anywhere from 6 to 18 of us, and take over a few tables. Krishna and his team are always so welcoming, and totally fine with us moving tables to accommodate a large group. We order family style, starting with the chicken tikka masala (always the right amount of spice), regular, garlic and "special" (with lamb!) naan, tandoori chicken, dal masala, biryani, chicken saag, and just about everything on a night with a big group. If I show up early, they'll treat me to papadum to snack on, and are quick to offer us glasses for the beer and wine we BYOB (and a corkscrew!) We always order extra rounds of food, and the crew brings out food on a rolling basis--always fast, always with a smile. They even take the goofy group photo we do every week, and have the patience to take a few different poses for us... Can't think of a better place to spend our Wednesday nights!

We tried a little bit of everything here and it's overall pretty good. I liked the samosas, chicken tikka and chicken tikka masala. The service staff is very friendly and what this places lacks in ambiance it makes up ten fold in value and BYOB status. Yes, you can bring your own drinks. Also picture a huge group of 9 eating and drinking...a feast will you....tons of food...bill 15 dollars per person. Unreal...ill be back but probably not on date night

The taste of the food at this place was fine. Nothing more to say about it. It tasted like good decent Indian cuisine. The best part about this place was (a) it's BYOB, and (b) our group of nine people were seated immediately at 8pm on a Saturday night. Also, the service was friendly. They helped us order enough food for the group (they were spot on) and they also didn't bother us when we spent a good hour (after we were done eating) finishing our last two bottles of wine :D In the end, this place was a great choice for a large group who wanted BYOB and a cheap dinner. The next time I return to this restaurant, it will most likely be under the same circumstances.

A big group of us go here every week, same day, same time. We do that for a reason: The food is fantastic, the guys who work there are awesome. Tikka Masala and one of the best in the city, and the Naan is always fresh. And it's BYOB, how can you beat that? Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who likes Indian/Pakistani food.

I am pretty sure most of the positive reviews here are people who actually ate at Pakwan and are just confused. I ordered a chicken curry, some naan, and a mango lassi. The curry had no flavor and immediately separated - no amount of stirring would cause it to achieve a curry-like consistency. The naan tasted like paper. The mango lassi had the consistency of milk and the color of orange markers. I can't imagine ever eating here again. Go to Pakwan, people. It's only a block away.

I have been living in the mission for 4 years. Alhamra is a great place. Like many restaurants they do have their bad days. I've gotten my share of cold, mixed up food but if you ask them to fix it they will re-due your order. Alhamra is a very humble place. The food is tasty and the price, for San Francisco living, is extremely reasonable and their portions are awesome. For a person like me, who uses most of his money to pay student loans and rent, one order of curry (any kind, with rice) and two orders of Nan-bread is less than $20 and is plenty for two people. I highly recommend that you try this place. Share one order with someone...it won't break the bank, it's easy on the waist and most importantly...it's tasty! Yes its an older location, yes its not romantic, its not hip or classy. (its 16th mission, for crying out loud) The food is great and even better, on a lazy night order take out...their food is so easy to re-heat (if its cold). Nan-bread in the oven for 5-8 min (350 degrees) lamb Curry in a small pot under medium heat until its hot (5-10 min) Delicious!

I first discovered this place when the line at Pakwan (across the street) was too long. On the plus side, the food here is super affordable and they have a wide variety of options, including some unique dishes that I haven't seen at other Indian restaurants in the city. I like that they are responsive to requests to make dishes mild and still manage to impart flavor. The service can be slow here, and the delivery is generally extremely slow. If you don't mind a bit of a wait, though, Alhamra is a great choice. I actually prefer it to Pakwan these days.

Very hit or miss here, the tandoori shrimp at $12.99 was good, but the biriani rice tasted warmed up and 5 days old and lukewarm at that .The birinai down the street at 3180 16th near Guerrero st. at Pakwan is outstanding. The chickentika marsala is ok, but nothing to right home about, Then there is the decor, horrible is say the least (Think curtains trying to hide their other DIRTY kitchen) Been to most pakistani restaurants in SF, this is NOT THE PLACE. Service very nonchalant

It's true. I don't yelp. But I'm going to yelp about Alhamra. Because they mean that much to me. I live three blocks from Alhamra and it is essentially my second home. I have been coming here since they opened, on average of at least once a week. The food is alway delicious. It's significantly better and more consistent than Pakwan (which is universally loved) up the street, only without the line or longer wait. They will treat you like family here. You should make this place your second home as well! Oh and you poach free wifi from Cafe Tazo (another great locally owned neighborhood business) next door.

I ordered delivery from here. The delivery was fast, but we didn't enjoy the food. The chicken tikka masala, which is usually very slightly sweet, tomatoey, and creamy, was just red and salty. The sweet naan with raisins and spices had just sugar and a single half-raisin. Frankly, it looked and tasted like a meal prepared by someone who either didn't care or wasn't paying attention. Unfortunately, I won't be ordering from here again. It wasn't horrible, but with so many better options I can't think of a compelling reason to try them twice. :-(

We were craving Indian and wanted to try a new place. We heard of this place from Check Please KQED Bay Area and decided to check it out. It's definitely tricky finding parking in the Mission but we were able to score a spot on a quiet side street on Ramona. We ordered: Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Achar, Rice, Naan, and a Okra dish. You sit down and they bring you the menu and you order from them while sitting down. The food was alright. I prefer chicken with bones and the Okra dish had a couple of "old" okra resulting in me spitting out the okra skin. Prices are moderate ($6-$8/dish)

One of the most inexpensive Indian joints i've been to. Chicken tikka masala for only $7.99! It was good for the price. Definitely not close to being the best Chicken Tikka Masala I've had but decent for the price. I really enjoyed their garlic naan because it wasn't just plain naan with some garlic on the top. Bits of garlic were enveloped in the warm naan so I got garlic with every bite. So good! We also had the chicken and cheese naan which was also pretty good. I know there's way better places out there but it made for a very satisfying dinner for my boyfriend and I. Lastly, wait for the tea to cool down so you don't burn your tongue like I did.

Saw this place on Check Please and decided that I'd walk over at lunch time and try it out. Overall, I'd give it 2.5 stars if I could, but I can't round up, so 2 it is. Food quality: Average, I had the Chicken Tikka Masala, garlic nan and rice. Not bad, but chicken seemed to be a lot of thigh meat with a bit too much gristle that hadn't been trimmed. Garlic nan was just ok. Ambiance: Total dive, but at least it's clean. Crowd: I was the only person there from noon-12:30 on a Tuesday. All other restautants that I passed were much more crowded. That wasn't a good sign. Service: Not a lot of attention, but they seemed nice enough.

I was IN LOVE with this restaurant for a long long time...a love affair that started around ten years ago. It was my go to spot when I was working/schooling for long hours, bummed out, or celebrating, as curry is my favorite food for good or bad moods. I love that it is still on sixteenth, still the same unassuming no frills interior, still great prices. BUT BUT BUT- I have gone here twice in the past couple of months after a long hiatus of avoiding the Mission...and WAS SO SAD. The curries I got were totally oil logged, like half an inch of inedible reddish oil floating on top. It was almost inedible, took me a good while to try to paper towel all that oil out. The chicken tikka was still good, the bread was pretty bland. Bottom line...I can no longer go here now for curry, it is just no good. And that is a total bummer. PLEASE bring back the old good quality curry that you used to make... I don't want yet another good, rooted, neighborhood staple to go out of business and be turned into some chic yuppy crap!

My favorite place in the city! The food is simple, delicious, affordable, and it is BYOB. On top of it all, the staff is friendly and fast. If you come on Wednesday nights, you might just see a few regulars, WNFD.

We were in the neighborhood, and remembered this place was featured on Check Please, so we ordered food to go. We were pretty disappointed with the food. The rice and nan were good, but that doesn't make up for over-oily Sag Paneer (with almost no cheese) and watery vegetable korma. Also, the vegetables were overcooked. I wondered if they served us from pots that had been on the stove all day. Don't think we will be coming back.

Got delivery yesterday, and the food was horrible. Sorry, there simply aren't other words. One star simply because it did not end up being the food poisoning guarantee that it looked like, when we opened up the containers. Perhaps vegetarian food is not their thing, but really... if you, as a restaurant, are going to offer something, at least consider a nod in the direction of taste & texture.

The food and service are outstanding. The flavor of their food is as authentic as it gets. Having tried all the regular spots in the Mission, I find myself going back to Alhambra. The food is much better than Pakwan, and the staff always make you feel like you're at home. If you just need some simple take-out, or want to relax with some friends....go to Alhambra, the real taste of Indian/Pakistani food.

The service was ok. First time at an Indian place and I would have liked the server to be a little more helpful but overall the food was good. It was a little cold where I was sitting, couldn't really enjoy the food because I was so cold. But great mom n pop shop.

This place deserves way more than 3 stars .... Every time my family and I go here (which is often) we get GREAT food!! Also, the employees/owner are so friendly....I've been to fancy Indian places and those restaurants have nothing on this one.. The food is great, the prices are great .... and I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone..

After a set of killer lunges with the masochistic workout group I hang with on Tuesday nights, we decided to punish our colons with dinner here. Nah, the food wasn't bad ... but we had one guy running around looking for lact-aid. All I could do was give furrowed brow "I'm sorry" looks to his girlfriend and chuckle to myself. The base was bumpin' ... from the club next door and all the food was delivered prior to the nan hitting the table. The nan never lasted long cause it was HOT and fresh. The food was mediocre ... lots of sauce and not a lot of meat ... but what do you expect with dishes that are $6 - $7. Still the flavors were vibrant and they didn't bat an eyelash while the 8 of us re-arranged the tables and tossed tandoori chicken legs at one another.

So every week I interned at a clinic 3 blocks from this place. One day I only had $5 in my pocket and craved curry. The curry was listed for $7.99+ and I didn't want to get naan or another starter for lunch. So I asked the employee if it was possible to ration down the curry for $5 worth. The people here are super nice! They said "Oh don't worry about it" and took my $5 and I sat at the place and ate my yummy curry (chicken tikka malsala). Made my day!

I'm sure this place hugely benefitted from being featured on the Bay Area's 'Check Please' -- there are signs and write-ups about that posted every which way inside -- but fame hasn't tilted Alhamra in the right direction, imo. Being moderately occupied, our group of five were hesitantly directed toward a table in the middle of the joint. We didn't know if we had to order at the front (where evidently a small lot were ordering to-go). We didn't know much of anything given that our 'server' was more aloof than a circus clown at a methadone clinic. Veggie pakoras: dense, freshly fried, but not a whole lot of flavor. Thank goodness the chutney was bomb. Chicken tikka masala, two orders: sauce was spiced well but not enough butter or salt. Large pieces of chicken breast which turned out to be too dry to enjoy. Saag paneer, two orders: cheese cubes are always a treat no matter what, but the spinach wasn't spicy or salty enough. Veggie korma: always a crowd pleaser, and here was no exception. Superb nutty, creamy flavor, and veggies were well cooked -- just such a small plate. Chicken tandoori: perfection. The chicken was nicely roasted, and you could definitely taste the marinade. It was also juicy and tender -- something rare with some tandoori dishes. Garlic naan: took forever to come out. Order was plenty small. It's basically regular naan with whole cloves of garlic stuffed inside, but not enough to be impressive. The boys ate up the side order of rice, but I'm not a huge rice person when it comes to Indian fare -- which is why I was HUGELY disappointed at the size of the naan. BYOB is pretty awesome -- we sent my brother away to get a wide selection of beers from across the way, and we did enjoy our meal with an interesting variety. Tsing Tao, Lagunitas IPA, PBR, Stella -- all welcome at our eclectic table. Restaurant is cluttered, inefficiently set up, with a mild air of uncleanliness. Servers will respond to you, but don't expect them to be enthusiastic or even helpful. Sorry Alhamra, but I'm sure SF has other less challenged Indian restaurants to enjoy next time.

I am SO disappointed. All I have to say is that the food is fantastic. If you decide to give this place a shot, go in with a strategy that will prevent you from smacking the staff upside the head - you are here for the food, not for the service. Best chicken tikka masala i've had in the city.

i was walking by alhamra and went in because it smelled delicious. and it was. i had the chicken tika masala. the sauce was creamy and spicey. the samosas were also crispy and delicious. the place was empty and we had the best service there ever was. the portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. it's self serve all the chai you and drink. i don't see anything wrong with it and i would certainly eat there again.

Inexpensive place with good Indian food! Family-owned restaurant, I think. I've had saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, aloo mutter, naan, rice, all good.

Nope! We went here after it got rave reviews on "Bay Area Check Please!" We are always looking for the next "most awesome" place, since ours closed over a year ago, so we have eaten Tikka Masala all over the bay area. We got the lamb samosas, a mango lassi, tikka masala, rice and naan. -The service was fine (we were the only ones there on a Saturday). -The mango lassi came out of a gallon milk jug and tasted like a runny mango Sunny D. My least fav one, ever. -The naan was very good, but came out first and was just about cold when our chicken arrived. -The Tikka was TERRIBLE. The sauce was soooo watery. Our first expectation in a good tikka is a thick, creamy sauce, and this one was neither. We also got very little chicken. -Even though we ordered samosas as an appetizer (it's on the appetizer menu) it came out last. Appetizers are meant to be munched on while you wait for your main dish. The samosa was just ok, the crust was PERFECT, but we didn't like the filling all that much, so we hollowed it out and put rice and some of the runny sauce in it. Once they serve you they are done with you. So when we were done we decided not to wait forever waiting to get our check, and we just walked up to the counter to pay. No thanks, there is a 76 Gas Station in Benicia that has better Tikka Masala, no kidding!

I've ordered from here many times over the past few years and the food has always been good, albeit very slow in arriving -- usually 45-60 min. Last night however after waiting 1 1/4 hour I called to inquire about my order and was told it would be an additional 20 minutes. 45 minutes later I called back and no one answered. I'm guessing they recognized the phone number and choose not to answer since it was only 9:30. My food order was never delivered. I would have actually been okay if they'd said they were too busy for a delivery; at least then I wouldn't have waited over 2 hours for dinner and then been insanely hungry when I did eat (which lead to poor choices in food). Truth be told I won't ever order from here again.... and be cautious if ordering delivery since it just might not ever show up. Thankfully I wasn't entertaining using their food -- now that would have been embarrassing....

Lunch at 1pm on a Wednesday, service terrible notwithstanding only one or two other customers. I wish I could say the food made up for it, but it was mediocre at best. Papad crisp and tasty, but cold (not fried on order), with coriander and tamarind sauces very watery. Lamb kabobs too dry, served on bed of undercooked onion. Garlic naan crisp and nicely baked in tandoor, but dominated by too much raw garlic. Very runny raita. Saag paneer, recommended by other yelpers, not great either. Excellent mango lassi, but bad sign if that's the highlight of the meal. Cost $15/person for a substantial amount of food, which would be a steal if the food were great, but IMHO it's not worth what it costs.

We went to this place after seeing it featured on 'Check Please! Bay Area'. I'm assuming they have received enormous amounts of extra business since the show because the phone was ringing off the hook with orders, and the service was slow because of the numerous calls. Despite that, the food was absolutely delicious. I'm not even a fan of Indian food (my boyfriend is), but I was incredibly pleased. I had the tandoori chicken burrito---absolutely DELICIOUS. Very simple, but very good. My boyfriend had the Aloo Palak (vegetarian dish) which was very tasty. If you're looking for fancy decor, you won't find it here. But if you're looking for tasty, home-made-like Indian food (at very affordable prices), I strongly suggest this place. Oh, and don't forget to order the sweet nan...mmm....

I love Alhamra. I have been going there for the past 6 years and the prices have stayed affordable and the food is amazing. Hands down my favorite restaurant in SF. You can't go wrong with any of the dishes and the naan is so good (and only $1). Everyone who works there is awesome. GO EAT THERE!!!

Not disabled friendly. They had a completely empty restaurant and refused to serve me because I have a service dog. So screw you. I'll go to Pakwan, where they're disabled friendly and welcome me and my service dog at any time. PS you're food isn't that great and your service is horrible.

Cheap delicious food! I came with a bunch of friends during a reunion of college buddies. Our friend suggested this as a good cheap hole in the wall. When we went in, we were basically the only customers. I was a little worried but was won over by their food immediately. We ordered some veggie simosas and they were delicious! Not too dry and just the right amount of taste. We order some butter chicken, tandori chicken, dal saag, lentils, rice, lamp and they were all delicious! Even the rice had a really good flavor to it. The nan had a little hint of sweetness which made it very nice. The tandori chicken is not dry at all and has a nice kick to it without the kick being over powering. Only the dal saag was a little disappointing. The spinach was not grounded very finely and the taste is a little watered down. But, we had 6 people, lots of food and the bill came out to be $75 including tax and tips which I thought was a great deal for the overall quality of the food! I had almost convinced myself that anything under $20/person must be bad or really dirty but this place broke me of that thought.

I'll give it one more star than it's averaging [4 instead of 3]. I can think of a LOT of places in that area that are much worse. The food is pretty good, great flavors, good smells, etc. The tandori is overrated, but then, I think tandori is overrated overall. It digests way better than Pakwan right down the street on 16th. But Pakwan tastes better [hella greasy and will rearrange your insides but tasty]. The Samosas were good and use lots of the sauce they give you in the squeezy tube. It makes everything tastes good.

  • Arrrrgh R.

Best tandoori chicken I have had!! If that was all they served out of a togo window, they would get 5 stars. I am giving it less because of a couple of things: 1. I had a coupon for free lamb or veggie samosa with an order of greater than $30 or so.. they did not honor it and said that it is only valid for veggie samosa - then why did it say in print LAMB? 2. I was feeling really lazy and asked for delivery eventhough they are only a few blocks down. They did not want to deliver and indicated that delivery would be 1 hour or I could pick it up in $15 minutes. This one I can deal with, but I really wanted delivery and feel that they should not say they deliver if they don't really deliver all the time. Yes I will still go back for the chicken - it was yummy!

Chicken tikka masala & papdams were nice. We requested "hot" & it was spicy but not too bad. Nice white meat too. Living Social coupon took $10 off of delivery! Great deal.

THIS PLACE IS THE BOMB! Really shady block so be careful. Order anything. Eggplant is good as is the tikka masala. The rice and nan are to die for.

I really enjoyed Alhamra, but would need to go back a time or two before decide if I'm enough of a fan to give it four stars. We had the chicken tikka misala, which was quite tasty & had a good tomato flavor, though, as my bf pointed out, it could've done with a little more complexity spice-wise. We also tried the goat curry (a special for the day), which was delicious, though involved picking the meat off of little bones. (Not sure I'd have the patients for that again.) The naan was better than average. I definitely need to go again & try a few more things.

  • Atousa A.

I like that they deliver for free, and they're QUICK. I like that two entrees and a side of rice = $18. But I think that's pretty much it. I don't like how the rice was pretty tastless. I don't like how the chicken tikka masala was SUPER saucy and not thick. I don't like how my friend's chicken something something was super watery and looked was extremely undercooked/seasoned. Nah. I'd try this place again though, since they deliver in like 10 minutes.

  • Maulie D.

If you like Pakwan then you will love Alhamra. In addition to their food tasting very similar, they take credit card and deliver for free! More detailed notes: * Like most restaurants, they skimp on the actual substance of the dishes - it will be mostly curry with only a few pieces of chicken in their CTM, or tiny pieces of eggplant in their Bhengan Bharta. * They do it spicy! Yay! * The wheat roti is horrendous, so just be bad and get naan. * The Seekh Kabab and Chicken Biryani are very close to Pakwan's in taste, except that the Biryani doesn't have potatoes.

    (3)
  • A S.

Their food is very tastey. Very flavorful. I like this place a lot. It's quieter and not as hipster as Pakwan. They often have a 20% off coupon in the value paks that come in the mail. Their naan is really good, soft and chewy. You can bring your own alcohol here too!

  • Buzz B.

I used to love this restaurant---the orders were taken really promptly and delivered really quickly, and the food was almost always delicious (had some awful lamb once, but that was forgiven) and definitely cheap. But in the past few months I've ordered from them a couple times a month and there's been a major drop in quality in everything from the rude phone service to delayed deliveries to the delivery woman trying repeatedly to push her maid service to the final insult: inflated bills. I used to be a waiter, so I tip well even for delivery. Yet the past three times I've ordered, I've had my credit card bills come with amounts that aren't what I signed for. The amounts are useless, always less than $1. But the principle matters. Someone (delivery person or owner) knows that I'm not going to waste my time chasing down 70 cents, and I assume I'm not the only one they do this to. (And no I'm not paranoid, and yes my handwriting is very clear.) I used to recommend this restaurant to people, and I still love the food. But I won't be ordering from there again. Oh, and the only reason I even started paying with credit cards is because they never had change for cash.

I must make this disclaimer before proceeding: DO NOT COME HERE FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. For the past 5+ years I have been honored to work in the Mission, and in turn, eat it's many delicacies. This is one spot where I do my bestest to not patron too often for fear of growing tired of the food. I cannot say that I have a favorite dish here cuz I simply enjoy all of them. Their lunch specials cannot be beat. Water they serve tastes good. The naan... OMG. If anything, they can sometimes drown their food in too much sauce to where it comes out looking like a soup. But hey.. that's why they offer extra naan free of charge. COME HERE TO EAT.

Ordered on Grub Hub. Have ordered from Alhamra via Grub Hub before without incident (although in hindsight, I think the food took about an hour to arrive). I have so far received 3 phone calls from the delivery driver telling me that it is "impossible" to enter my building using the callbox. Yes, I know technology can be a pain, that is why I clearly explain on the order form HOW to use it and WHAT name to enter. After arguing about this (which was difficult to do, I could barely understand him), I agreed to come down-- a HUGE pet peeve of mine (call me lazy, but isn't that the whole point of delivery?!). And behold, no sign of a delivery driver. Just got the call. Talked the driver through the callbox, while also pointing out "You can't do this while I am on my phone with you, as this line is connected to the callbox." Cautiously hung up and waited to buzz the driver in. Nothing. Ding-dong! My doorbell! The driver is actually a she, and says nothing to me as she thrusts the receipt and food at me. I almost scratched off the tip amount, but Grub Hub had already processed it. Meh. Bummer about that lil incident, because their food is pretty darn good for the price. I'm gonna give 3 stars instead of 2 because, now that my dinner is here, I am suddenly in a better mood.

$5.50 vegetarian lunch special is where it's at... Any two veggie entrees with generous helpings of rice and naan. The Saag Paneer is on point. The paneer is a bit dry but the spinach is fresh, not drowning in cream like a lot of places, and nicely spiced. The Navrattam Korma and Benghan Bhartha are always safe bets too. Oh and you can ask for your food to be "not too spicy" here but it won't do you much good. The waiter will nod and smile, but the food is pre-made, so there ain't a lot that can be done to adjust the spice level. And the food here tends to be quite spicy, although it can vary. If you are a wimp when it comes to spiciness, like Katie H., order a side of Raita to cool it down. Al Hamra remains a good go-to option for a cheap (veggie entrees under $5), safe (94 health inspection score), Bartable (less than a block from Mission and 16th), and spicy fill-up in the Mission.

Alhamra is a great little restaurant that has excellent lunch specials. They give you a large basket of naan and then a main dish, side dish, and rice. Plenty of food for 7-9 dollars a plate. Their prices seem to fluctuate depending on their mood, but nonetheless, some great food!

I tried them again and this time it took so long to get my food that it was semi cold by the time I got it. Also this is the second time I asked for a menu and did not get one. I made my standard order that I knew didn't meet their minimum and since they didn't bring me a menu the first time I asked I had to let the guy on the phone make a recommendation, I told him that the lamb thing he recommended last time was too greasy for me so he suggested something with vegetables. It turned out to be the same greasy thing just with potatoes and peas instead of lamb. I'll give them another shot the next time I'm craving Indian.

-1 star: Chicken tikka does indeed taste like melted Nacho cheez sauce from 7-11. -1 star: service is so bad that I'm amazed people wait to pay the bill instead of walking out. +1 star: Lamb chops are tasty and relatively cheap. +1 star: BYOB with cheap l

Anything so good and spicy as this - so good and spicy, in fact, that it beat back a bona fide migraine - gets five stars from me, hands down. Unreal. My picky wife and selective friends were enamored as well. Chicken tikka masala, vindaloo, tandoori chicken, veggie samosas, garlic and plain naan and a veggie dish - all fantastical. I did wish the garlic naan was "brushed" instead of "stuffed," but it's still great.

  • Mike F.

The food was pretty decent and its cheap. I ordered lamb samosas, chicken makhni and lamb korma. They were nicely spiced and pretty tasty all around. That said there was an awful lot of sauce in each plastic tub for the amount of other ingredients. The lamb was also a little on the greasy side. The samosas were a little greasy, but the meat was really tasty. My biggest gripe is that they overcharged me by about $5. I hadn't added up the total myself (I had a ballpark figure in my head) and the delivery driver showed me a yellow slip with some illegible writing on it. Not a huge amount of money, but irritating nonetheless. I guess the lesson here is to ask for a total every time. Most delivery places tell you a total, this one doesn't.

  • Elzabeth G.

Unorganized and chaotic is the best way to describe this place. Which would be OK if the food was good, unfortunately it's not. We came here because a friend saw it on Check Please Bay Area - I saw part of that show and I think the Indian on the show who raved about it must be a part owner, as there is nothing to rave about this place. Those that frequent this place and give it 4 and 5 stars must never have had a good Indian meal in their life. With so many great flavorful Indian restaurants in the city I'm not sure why anyone would go here. I've had some really good tikka masala and some really bad stuff. The tikka masala here is slightly below average and so is the naan. In terms of the one waiter they had, the poor guy is serving the whole restaurant on his own and because of that we had to go up and get our own menus and place the order ourselves. He forgot a lot of things and we would have to constantly ask about this or that. He brought our appetizers half way through the main meal and the naan came at the end of the meal. The bad service became such a joke that the other tables around us were sharing their bad experiences with us as we waited for the waiter to give us a menu. It became such a joke we were wishing each other luck when we had to go up to the counter. I could put up with the service if the food was worth coming back for. Definitely will not be back, there are a tonne of better Indian restaurants with great food in SF.

Yes, I'm a fan of Alhamra. 3 stars for the food +1 for how easy it is to bring a big group, and that you can BYOB with no fee at all. This is a place where you order food at the counter, pay there (most likely under $10 - credit cards are accepted), and then they bring the food to your table. I'm not an indian food expert by any means, but I thought my lamb curry was great, and my friend was a big fan of her chicken tikka masala. We were actually there in a group of about 15 people and the guys working there arranged the tables in a nice long row for us. The service may have been a bit slow, but we weren't there for a quick in and out, we were there for a cheap, long BYOB-Saturday-night-dinner.

I have gotten the lamb kebabs with rice and a naan twice now, both times it's all really good and filling. The price is nice too. However I wish the people working in the place were a tab more personable...

Like your Indian friend brought you home to mom's house for dinner. Say goodbye to the overly creamed out, oily, and nuclear glowing food. I mean, we only really had 3 dishes, but the sample alone was good enough for me. 1. chicken biryani - was awesome. $7 for real home style Indian fried rice. One thing I noticed, was that it wasn't super sloshed with spices or sauce. There was a real good balance of fragrant basmati rice - I mean, you could actually see some white of the rice. And it wasn't sitting in a pool of oil like other places I've been. 2. bhengan bharta - otherwise this mild eggplant curry dish - it was creamy and saucy, but I wouldn't say overly. It had firm pieces of eggplant and it didn't seem like it was cooking for days. tasty, mildly spicy, and hearty. 3. chicken tandori (half chicken) - this actually was the one item that wasn't so good. it's really hard to mess this one up, so I wouldn't say it was bad, but it wasn't juicy and tender. it's kinda like that roast beef sandwich you get at a work function - it's not great, it's not top shelf, but it works. I'd probably pass on this only because when you hear the words 'tandori chicken from the oven' you think of hot, leaky, spicy, firm, and explosive spiced chicken that just blows you away. yeah. it didn't have that. What was surprising, is that if you eat in, they actually serve you. Which is weird, b/c most joints make you bus your own utensils, water, and condiments. So that was a nice touch. The atmosphere still has that divey Indian feel - kinda run down, smokey, low lighting (not in a good way), and just a tick away from being modern. I like how the kitchen is in the front so you know there's some accountability on the chefs. Plus, less chance of vermin. Yeah, I said it. The awing looks a bit suspicious, but this is a hidden gem. I'll definitely be back. Note. Larger set people make note of the bathroom. The set up is kinda jacked up in that you kinda have to shimmy into the restroom No joke. I barely made it through. Barely.

I'm not gonna lie, the service is terrible. If service you can call it. They don't really seem interested in the patrons. So if that is important to you, then you might get irritated--or maybe skirt around it with take out or delivery. The food, however, is the best Indian I have had in the city thus far. I like it spicy, and they will make me sweat. They can also do mild for those non-spicy folks. If I am anywhere in the neighborhood, I only go here for Indian.

Pretty good. The dude working there wasn't very attentive and the place wasn't packed. But the rice was perfect and the garlic nan bread was nice and chewy. I think I had the Vegi Korma. I ordered Raita thinking it was going to be like a cucumber yogurt salad. It was just sauce. My bad. The food was good and I had enough to take home. Not much as far as ambience, but its cheap and satisfying in the heart of the mission.

So, this was my first time to venture off and try indian cuisine. I've heard from many people that indian food is a bit pricey in general. I yelped for indian cuisine and decided to try this place out... I ordered the chicken biryani. It was AMAZING and different from anything that i've ever had before. It had a lot of spices and some mild heat with several chunks of chicken. It beats oiled up chicken fried rice from chinese restaurants. The garlic nan was okay and a bit bland for my taste, though it was my first time trying this. I put some of the green lime sauce stuff on the side and that fixed up that appetizer. My friend ordered the chicken tikka masala. I dipped some of the nan in that and the sauce of that was very good. The only setback to this place was the service. There was only one waiter/server when i got there, which was a bit past 1. He was going back and forth from the register to helping out make nan in the kitchen ( you can see the kitchen from the dining area). My friend had to actually get up and ask for an extra order of rice. Besides that, the food was very good and interesting first for eating indian / pakistani food. I would definitely come back.

Passed this place a million times, but always looked off from the outside. Finally went inside. It's not off. My CTM was fine. The chicken was white meat - I think the chunks were cut too large or something. My puportedly garlic naan, was more like daal naan, but it was good. The prices were fine. I mean - sorry Lahore Karahi has ruined me.

This may be the best Indian/Pakistan place in the city. It's low key, well priced and delicious. Plus you can bring your own beer. Highly, highly recommended.

Great bang for the buck, I got the vegetarian lunch special with two vegetarian dishes, naan and some basmati rice. It was good, not spectacular but it did more than fill me up for $5.50. That is the only reason why this place got that high a rating... I wouldn't recomend coming here for the ambiance, quality of service or anything else. Just focus on the quick, cheap and relatively tasty food (I wouldn't say its the best, but is decent enough if that means anything).. I'd really like to give it two and a half. Food wise, Pakwan is better but it gets far more crowded. Alhrma does fulfill my craving for greasy indian food though and I'll go back there again

Alhamra is cheap the delivery is fast and the food is good try the saag paneer chicken tikka masala and aloo ghobi it's kind of spicy so get a side of rice and naan to follow it with When the morning comes you may feel a little sick so stock up on tums but I guarantee you will want their food again I know that I do that was dumb. sorry. don't take it out on Alhamra though.

We have been ordering delivery from this place for years - the quality is sometimes better than others - their service has hit a new low. They never recognize us when we order (we order the same thing every time) I like to use their coupon for the free Lamb samosas (we spent over $50.00)- Our order was very, very late - I had to call to check on it after an hour & he said it just left - we are only 6 blocks away - it took another 30 minutes - and we did not get our "free Samosas" ( i did tip well too) I called & they said they would send them when the delivery lady came back. Our food was very, very cold! Another hour later, I never got my Samosas, so I called again - he said, oh we gave you $3.00 dollars off instead - i said I did NOT want $3.00 off - I wanted Lamb Samosas!! I told them they were very very rude & why didn't they call me back & tell me that - we had been waiting for the damn Samosas. A real stupid idiot - I intend to call his boss tomorrow - but from all of the other reviews here, It looks like they just don't care - there is a new Indian Restaurant that delivers in the Castro - I intend to order from them next time

Definitely divey, but I like their delivery better than anyone else's and my sit-down experiences there have been OK (although you sometimes have to prompt to make sure they remember your bread or your beverage). Their aloo gobi is the best in town (potatoes are tender and warm!), and the curries are good too -- just tried their chicken karahi, which was nicely done.

Usually I like to use Yelp to give good reviews to places I adore. The way I figure it, I can share my experiences and hopefully help steer people toward good food. This is one of those few times I have to steer people away. I came to Alhamra after seeing the review on "Check Please! Bay Area" On the show, a cardiologist (who was, himself, Indian) raved about the place. So, I figured I'd give it a try. I went for the Chicken Vindaloo and was sorely disappointed. First, they used way, way too much oil; about 1/4 inch of oil settled on top of my take out container on the way home. Second, the sauce was watery and had very, very little flavor. Third, there were two pieces of chicken and three potatoes to the entire dish. Had the curry been richer, I would have been satisfied. Alas, it wasn't to be. I wanted to like this place, because it's near my house and I love Indian food (and, yes, I've had the real thing both in India as well as from friends who hail from both the North and the South). I will say the food coming out of the tandoor looked good, I can only hope that it was flavored better than my curry. Two stars for mediocre food at an okay price.

The food here is very good, and when I came, they gave us the lunch-special price even though it was way past lunch time. I felt kind of bad for how little money I had spent on such delicious food. If you use a wheelchair, do not come to this place, because you have to climb over the toilet in order to close the bathroom door. The ADA-believing, disability-rights part of me hates this place because of the bathroom, but the really-interested-in-crappy-design part of me wants to bring everyone here just to see the bathroom. I'm torn. UPDATE: 9/16/08 ============== So I'm going to go ahead and ding Alhamra a star because of its wheelchair-inaccessible bathroom.

I know there are countless strikes against Alhamra's service and general professionalism. While I hold these restaurant virtues very highly dining elsewhere, I ease my standards when I'm sitting down at Alhamra. I keep going back because it's quite inexpensive and there are several dishes I find myself craving in between visits. I love their Dal Sag, which is about $4.99. Their Chicken Biryani is also lovely at $7.99. The Chicken Sag is my favorite chicken dish for $7.99. My other half always gets the Chicken Tikka Masala for $7.99. Rice is another $1, Naan another $1, Raita $2, and house-made chai tea for $1/person. What all these numbers mean is that my lady and I can hop the 22 and in a few minutes arrive in the beating heart of the uber-hip and buzzing Mission, booze-of-our-choice in hand (no corkage fee), and step into Alhamra to take our pick (usually) of any table we want, feast like royalty, and walk away only down about fifteen bucks each! What's not to love?! Which brings me to my next point. On at least two occasions I've watched and listened to regular customers complain about hygiene issues, especially from the younger looking guy who never smiles. I listened to a customer tell him he "watched you scratch your head, your face, your nose, and then your ear! You gotta wash your hands, man. I come in here all the time, but I'm just saying: you gotta wash your hands." This is the guy who is borderline rude with us when he serves us. He recognizes us, and we both do our best to charm the pants off of him. It's all we can do to get him to smile. On the other hand, the taller server has a fantastic smile, and he's always jolly, if a little short, with us. He always seems happy to see us. So it comes down to this: what kind of experience are you expecting? If you're expecting attention from the service staff, then you will be disappointed. By that I mean don't count on more than two visits to the table, and yes, you should go the counter when you want to pay. But if you want bomby Indian food on the cheap, then this is the place!

Best Indian in the Mission. My boyfriend and I have been so hooked, we've eaten here once a week for the last 6 years. I love the garlic nann, tandoori chicken, tikki masala, chai, everything. It's all about authentic food, no frills. I'm moving but if I visit SF again, I will be coming back here - I'm going to miss it.

Great Food We had a party of 11 on 3/8/12 and the service was great and the food was so fresh and tasty. Parking is easy merely use the Hoff Street Parking garage it is a few hundred feet away and was only $2-$3. Naan was freshly made, hot and light. Everything was very flavorful some spicy and some mild. The spinach was the only thing that I thought was overcooked. Service was friendly and attentive. We will all be back.

We saw a positive review on Check Please Bay Area and were excited to try them out. I ordered the food on the phone and they said it would be about one hour for delivery. At 1.5 hours, I called wondering what happened. The guy, who was barely comprehensible on the phone, could care less and brushed me off and impatiently said another 10-15 min. I called 15 minutes later, and same guy said 'What do you want me to do?' and then hung up on me. At 2 hours an elderly delivery man showed up WITHOUT the CC slip for me to sign and kept telling me it's my responsibility to go to the restaurant and sign the slip, because I'm the customer and it's my job. He had no solutions or protocol whatsoever. The food was mediocre at best. WE ARE NEVER ORDERING FROM THEM AGAIN. EVER.

We got delivery yesterday because it was pouring rain. It came out to about $30 plus tip. 2 Garlic Nan: HUGE pieces of nan! Very very very garlicky. Could have been toasted a little bit more, but it was good. Chicken Tikka Masala: Quite tasty. I like the flavor and the extra kick from the spiciness. The chicken had some bite to it...I was surprised it was chicken breast. Mutter Paneer: The sauce was very good. Peas weren't overcooked, so they still had bite to them. Not enough pieces of cheese. Rice (Chawal): I think Chutney's rice is better because it's more flavored with different spices, but the texture of this rice was still perfect. Mango Lassi: Excellent. Perfect consistency (I like my smoothies a little runnier so when I sip through a straw, I don't have to suck really hard). Though, for $2.50-3, it wasn't really worth it. It was like a normal sized coffee cup filled halfway. NOT COOL. Overall it was satisfying, but we found it kind of pricey for the amount of food we got.

there was a man in a bizzness suit discussing matters of bizzness with a man in an apron who seemed sad as i supped on the first of three delicate-as-balls samosas. my dude, ha ha, these were some samosas. afterwards, i went outside and received an apple from a group of men who were singing in an unfamiliar language.

I have been coming here for years. I WILL NO LONGER!!!!! I ordered delivery and when I received the order, It was missing some items I ordered. When I called back, they let me know he would be right there with the items ordered. 20 minutes later, nothing. I called back, the guy on the phone reassured me he would be right there once again. Another 20 minutes later, nothing. When I called the third time to let him know that I still hadn't received anything, he told me the driver had never returned and that he wouldn't be returning soon and that I would have to wait until he returned and then possibly I would get it sometime after that. At this point, I was frustrated. I explained to him that I would have loved this honest explanation earlier. Instead they LIED to me. I asked him to please make do on our order and he told me that he couldn't guarantee anything... after I paid in full and tipped well. OH, and at one point, he hung up on me. In summary, THESE GUYS LIED to me! Don't tip or pay unless you have thoroughly examined your order. So, here I sit 1 hour after they originally game me my incomplete order, with cold al hamra and stake pakoras. I would rather honesty than this. I would have been much happier. So, after 10 years of being a customer... I NO LONGER GO HERE. Do yourself a favor... go to Pakwan or some other restaurant that would love your business rather than lie to you just to get you off the phone. I really wish they would n

I really, really like this place. The Chicken Tikka Masala is some of the best I've ever had. Sometimes. It seems like there are a few different cooks here, and they don't all share the same recipes. Most of the time it is spot on, hence the four star rating. I've also had good experiences with the Vegetable Korma and the Saag Paneer, just for the record. If you want it spicy, you have to tell them, otherwise it's very mild. I can't comment on the staff or the actual restaurant itself, as I have always gotten either carry-out or delivery. Speaking of, they deliver until 11pm, so they get quite a bit of business from me. And it blows away Pakwan. They're not even in the same league. Recommended, but your best bet is almost always to get food on the weekends. It's just... better. For whatever reason.

The food is fantastic. The service is god awful. The place looks like a dump inside. _____________________________ My favorite part was when the cook or dishwasher came into the actually restaurant part of the establishment where a sink was and did a farmer blow (Shot Snot out of his nose) into it bent over the sink to hock up a looch too. _----------------------------------------------- THE FOOD WAS REALLY GOOD THOUGH...

With sushi, pizza, burritos AND burgers all ruled out, all that was left was indian/pakistani. My BF and I headed down to the mission to Al Hamra which he heard from a friend was not too bad. The atmosphere is kinda bland with some christmas lights hung on the walls which I'm pretty sure are there for extra lighting. The music is pretty standard to the naan and curry type places. There is a large counter to the left as you walk in and you're not entirely sure if its table or counter service. We finally asked someone after not being approached and were seated. There are not many (if any?) 2-seater tables -- most of 6 or more. Water is brought to the table promptly along with menus. I ordered naan and prawn tikka masala (mediumly spicy). My BF ordered chicken tikka masala and naan. We ordered rice and aloo ghobi to share, tea for me and a can of Coke for Steve. The food showed up quickly but I never got my tea :-(. Mine was extremely spicy as was Steve's (and he ordered mild)! The aloo ghobi wasn't as good as Naan & Curry's. Both tikka masalas were what we expected. My naan seemed to be a white bread, chewy and fluffy, while Steve's was a crispy whole-wheat-looking bread. After we were finished, no one came over with a check (we waited nearly 10 minutes after our plates were cleared). I paid cash and left a $5 tip. In all, it wasn't bad. The food tasted good and, once you got past the spicyness, was enjoyable. I recommend a glass of milk with any order, but I don't know if they serve milk. Bring your own, since you may never get what you order to drink anyway :D

i got delivery from alhamra last week and was pretty disappointed. after waiting for an hour, i called and was advised that my food "was on the way" even though they didn't ask about my order or who i was. over 10 minutes later, it showed up, lukewarm. i think they walked since they are about 4 blocks away from my place. food-wise, there were hits and misses. a big NO-NO was the soggy papadum. also, the paneer tikka masala was more like tofu, which made me sad because i was really looking forward to it; the sauce was also bland enough to where i was not sopping it up with naan as per usual. mister B and I both give two thumbs up for the tandoori chicken, and the veggie korma was also good. i'll give them another shot, though probably not delivery.

Stopped by here the other day with my friend. He and I are always walking around the Mission together and love to pop in on little hole in the wall restaurants and share a bite to eat. We love Indian and the menu looked good so we decided to give it a try. We ordered an order of the vegetable samosa $3, 2 orders of naan ($1 each) $2, and an order of the chicken curry $7.99. So the total of this is $13.00, tax rate in SF is 9.5% so this would bring me to $14.22. The amount charged on my card? $14.97. If there was some kind of SF healthcare tax or something like that then I should have received an itemized receipt explaining this. The lady that rung us up was just acting really shady and didn't give me a receipt. I had to go back and request a receipt from her. This just annoyed me a lot. Ya its only 75 cents but if you continue to overcharge people here and there, you have eventually scammed a large sum of money. This is bad business practice and should be reported to the better business bureau! Anyway, the food wasn't food, at all!

I like this place. Food is good and the prices are better. Service is so-so...sometimes the items I order don't arrive--no big deal. The older guys who work here are a little friendlier than the younger ones. Overall, 4 stars.

I haven't yelped about anything for 12 months. And I wasn't inclined to yelp about Alhamra last night after I left the place after dinner. But today, after smacking down the chicken byrani that I ordered "to go", I am compelled to tell y'all - look no further! If you are another desi yearning for chicken byrani, the way it should be done, Alhamra's got it! And if you happen to be from Karachi, think student's byrani - kapeesh? So the service is not amazing. But the prices are. And the food definitely IS! Last night the Bihari kebab and Chicken Karhai (spicy please) rocked my world. And the conversation in "theek punjabi" between the waiter and another customer was music to my ears - sweet like honey dripping off a jalebi! I am moving to the mission so that I can eat there everyday. Bus! Khatam baath!

If you are looking for good Indian food where you don't have to tell the waiter to make your Vindaloo spicey, then this is the place. If you are looking for over-priced mediocer Indian food where your chicken has bones in it, then go on down the street to Pakwan. Don't let the looks deceive you.

These guys are a great family owned indian restaurant, the food is very authentic and the RICE IS EXCELLENT, the service is genuine but not over the top. Most likely the only Indian restaurant that I know of in San Francisco that delivers.

I love this place. I go here as often as I can. Which lately, since my job is now far away, is practically never. But I always try to get people to eat here when we don't know where to eat. I think the look of the place scares people away. I really don't care about stuff like that, so whatever. This place is SO CHEAP and that is very important to me, because I am too. I am in LOVE with their lunch menu, the two vegetarian dishes, rice, and naan for like five bucks. What could be any better? It's all pretty spicy, and it could get hotter or less hot if you want it. This place makes my wallet happy. I would give it a 4.5 but they don't have that, so I'm giving it a 4, because they don't have some dishes that I would like them to have. Not as much choice as some other restaurants, but at like half the price, who cares? A lot of the time when I try to get people to go here we end up deciding to go to Pakwan instead. Sucks for my wallet, even though really Pakwan isn't much more expensive

Just got the veg lunch special for $6.50 (price went up?). My choice of 2 curries (Sag Paneer and Bengan Bharta) with rice and a whole naan. Excellent flavor, some of the best I've had! Call ahead for pickup to save a wait of 5-10 minutes while it cooks.

These people are dishonest - BEWARE OF THE CREDIT CARD FRAUD! (see also Buzz' review) The food is pretty good. Too bad the service is so-so. The real issue about this place is something else. The bottom line is - do not use your credit card there! I paid with a credit card the past three times I dined in this place, and included the tip in the receipt. I almost always round the total amount, including the tip, so it would be an easy number, and I write the numbers very clearly. Anyway, apparently these people charge your credit card more! They don't add a lot (less than a buck), so it won't be noticeable. But it adds up. And they did all three times, each time adding a different amount. So this is not a random mistake. It is intentional. I keep all my credit card receipts (where I also write how much I left for the tip) and then compare them to my credit card statement at the end of the month. That's how I noticed it. I think they count on people not keeping or checking their receipts. So if you dine there, and don't want to take chances with these people, pay only with cash.

Stopped in here with my father and a friend. It was Dad's first Indian food. Pretty easy, though, since it is basically meat in sauce, variously spicy. Family-style, we shared lamb, chicken, and beef in different dishes with rice and nan. The lamb and the chicken--the meats themselves--were especially delicious. The food was spicy enough to get us sweating, but not uncomfortably so. The mango lassis were tasty. The garlic nan didn't impress anybody. The service was decent, but it would have been nice if I didn't have to walk up to the counter to get a second pitcher of water. At any rate, they get an extra star because that meat was just sooo dang tasty! I figure this is a "nicer" "full service" alternative to Pakwan. Free Delivery.

Delicious! San Francisco has some fantastic Pakistani-Indian places and this is one of them! Don't go here for the atmosphere -- it is very basic. Don't go here for the service -- it is a little abrupt and definitely not warm & fuzzy. DO go to Alhamra for some deliciously spicy food!

Service was a little bit slow and the dark hallway to the bathroom was quite creepy BUT the food made up for that. YUM

I am currently 9 months pregnant and I'm due any day now and we thought we would try eating spicy food to speed things along. We ordered our dinner around 6:05pm and when I placed the order online, it stated delivery time would be 60-90 minutes but our food came within 35 minutes. Extra plus for fast delivery. The delivery guy had no problem finding our place since usually most deliveries always calls us telling us they can't find our place. He even walked up 3 flights of stairs for me. Food was hot and very tasty. We had ordered the Chicken Tika Masala spicy, Beef Curry hot, Aloo Palak mild (spinach, potatoes with spices), Nan, Roti, flavored rice and Aloo Nan. My husband loved the Chicken Tika Masala with the Nan. I totally loved the Beef Curry spicy with the Aloo Nan and the Raita (cucumber and yogurt). A little disappointed on how little beef chunks and chicken pieces were in the dishes, about 6-7 pieces in each dish. The curry wasn't thick, more on the watery side but good enough to dunk the nan in to soak up the sauce. Very tasty sauce. The Roti was on the dry side, which is probably our only complaint.

Really, ppl think this place is good? I went with some friends last night and had not only horrible food, but also amazingly bad service. it started out "great" when my friend ordered a sparkling water, which had no sparkle in it. When we told them they said they didn't have sparkling water. THE BOTTLE SAYS SPARKLING water!!! as did the others in the refrigerator. So they took it back (but conveniently left it on the check). The naan had very little if any taste (and we got flavored naan's) and the Saag paneer was DISGUSTING. My mango lasse was not that tasty and served in a child's size glass. Achar, which is usually free with meals, cost here and they gave such a small size. I wish i had talked to friends before coming here, as since mentioning it to ppl they all said the same thing. It used to be decent, and has been far below that for a while. I don't think Pakwan up the street is that great either, but it blows this place out of the water. I will not be coming back here ever again.

Stopped in for some quick, cheap, and good Indian food and they delivered. It was quite empty on a Sunday night, but that was perfect for me and my date. I had the Bengan Bharta and it was good. Not stellar, but good. Pretty oily, but maybe that's how it's supposed to be. total bill for 2 entrees, rice, naan, samosas = $18. Bam!

My son suggested we try this place after seeing it on 'Check Please! Bay Area'. I was a bit reluctant to try Alhamra after reading some of the negative reviews but we decided to give it a try because most of the negatives were people unhappy with the take out or delivery service. Our family was pleasantly surprised. We immediately asked if we were supposed to seat ourselves and was given the nod. Because of the warnings on the other reviews, we grabbed the menu ourselves. It was not a very busy Monday evening but almost all the tables were full. We did not know what we were supposed to do ourselves because of the reviews and we did observe another customer going up to get a cup himself. The food was tasty. The portions are small but no smaller than other Indian restaurants we have tried. We ordered the sweet naan, the garlic naan, tandoori chicken, lamb chops, shrimp, chicken tikka masala, curry lamb and rice. We're wimps, so we did blow our noses but the food was tasty, spicy and not just burning. We particularly liked the chicken tiki masala, tandoori chicken and lamb chops. The naan was excellent. The service was attentive when needed. The young Tibetian waiter, born in India, raised in Taiwan, immigrated to the USA just a year ago was very pleasant which made up for any negatives in service...like not suggesting we ordered rice, or offering more water. He responded immediately to any requests, for more water, more napkins for our noses, more rice. There is a difference between inexperience and rudeness. This young man was definitely trying hard and was the only waiter (hence an extra 1/2 star). It is not a plush place and the cold wind blowing in from the open doorway had us putting our jackets on. The plastic cups were a turn off but they were clean. The total bill including tax was just under $63 for the 4 of us. We definitely will return. Any one star review for the food is unfair.

I highly desire this place. i watch them cook, ring me up, write my order, serve me, stroll between the tables - always without a smile or a hint of emotion. the man who cooks watches the street like Popeye the Sailor surveying 16th street for walking cans of spinach. this one woman there is the one I could have berth my children, a sturdy, maternal woman - her warn yet warm hands placing my dinner in front of me as if she were planting seeds within the earth

I've eaten in at this place a couple times and recently ordered delivery and thought I'd finally write a review. FOOD: the chana masala and benghan bartha (sp?) were very tasty. We ordered is spicy and they made it spicy the native way....by using spice! Left a nice tingle in my mouth (my buddy also felt the same way). SERVICE: this place is not known for their service. the decor and vibe of the restaurant itself is kinda blah. it took me a while to get through on the phone (Sunday night) and once I finally did, I was put on hold. food took about 45" to arrive, despite my being only a few blocks away. perhaps it was busy, but most of the other restaurants in that area deliver within 20-25 minutes. but, I am glad they deliver as i'll be ordering again and just planning around the long(ish) wait. PRICE: good value indeed

ripped off. was charged for an additional two meals, the person who ran my debit card walked off pretending nothing happened. another employee took my card, voided the transaction and charged me for the real price. he apologized profusely; however, when i called my bank a day later, the charge had not been credited to my account. i phoned the restaurant and spoke to the manager who said to cal back later because he had no idea about voids or how his restaurant processes them. i'm sure the money will be credited, but in between jobs, $13 is enough to get me by for a couple of days and now the money's somewhere between their bank and mine while i munch on an apple waiting at home. won't be going back there

Just dropped it a star -- Their website lies. Me and my girlfriend decided at 12:00 to wait for their advertised Sunday delivery starting at 2pm -- I called and got an EXTREMELY rude phone call that consisted of the guy on the phone saying "no not until 5" and before I could say "why does the website say..." he hung up on me. WTF? Not cool. A good restaurant perhaps would have suggested an order for pickup? I mean are they kidding with this kind of pathetic service? I woulda picked up, but not being hung up on. I was nice with a 5 star review for this place originally. Update your website properly an BE POLITE Great lunch menu. For $8 I get my favorite chicken tikka masala in the city... plus nan, plus, plus vegetable side. The TM is also spicy in a very pleasurable way, just like most of their dishs. They also deliver promptly... I love this place!!! Atmosphere stinks and they can be a little slow but the price and quality is awesome I actually don't usually order Tikka Masala a lot, but this one is soooo good. And spicy! Not a normal TM, better. Pro's - Spicy, but spicy done well. Done right. They will also do mild - Fantastic Price for Lunch. - Consistent delivery Con's - Waiters and cashiers a bit aloof-seeming, but common IMO with indian restaurant run family-oriented (it appears to me). Definitely spicier than most places by default -- a preference for me. I eat in for lunch, but I'd probably never dine in

Good, cheap, and fast eats. Three of us - all very hungry - came here before a movie at the Victoria Theater. - Two orders of naan - One order of roti - Three dishes (2 chicken, 1 veg) - Two mango lassi's We ordered regular naan and it was good; not extraordinary but just as you'd expect naan to taste. I was a bit confused by the roti, which looked and tasted exactly like the naan. Maybe I'm just used to a different style of roti but it was surprising. We each picked a dish - mine was the Chana Masala and I liked it a lot. Solid spices, not too oily. If I lived in the area, I'd probably be ordering this a lot. Skip the mango lassi. For $2, it's a very small glass and didn't taste like it was worth $2. The atmosphere is very simple. There are tables and there are chairs. There's an interesting mural on one wall and mirrors on the other. Kinda dark but still spacious enough to not be creepy. As mentioned previously, the bathrooms are horribly configured: a lesson in poor design, indeed! We all left very full and happy. For $30, that's not bad. Would I go again: Yes Would I go out of my way: No

I had the two-curry veggie lunch special. For exactly $6 (that's with tax, but not tip), you get a decent sized hot meal with, I believe, fresh naan. Not amazing food, but not bad either.

I went to Al Hamra today after Easter Day in Dolores Park. I was planning on going to Pancho Villa for a burrito but they were closed. I was the ONLY person in there. There were four employees working so I got awesome service and freshly cooked food. The naan was perfectly cooked. It was slightly crispy which is just how I like it. The chicken tikka masala sauce was of the thin variety and was the perfect amount of spicy. The chicken was good. I wouldn't have minded a little bit more chicken but it was just adequate. It came with a spinach type side dish and rice. The place had kind of a dark vibe but maybe that was just because it was so empty and they didn't need all the lights on. Cost: $8 + $2 tip. Total out the door: $10

1 star for their food (The Lamb Vindaloo tastes like the sirloin steak in Cambell's Chunky soup. No joke.) 1 star for being able to BYOB and bringing a large party. That's probably the only reason why I would go back.

  • Karen B.

The food's o.k. -- I enjoyed the lamb vindaloo. However, when I had curried shrimp the shrimp was overcooked. The staff aren't particularly attentive -- although I suspect it might be a lack of comfort in English. This was the first place I ate in the City, and I also ate there my last day, more a matter of convenience -- it was close by, and I like Indian food.

I really wanted to give this place more stars... but i just couldnt. The people that work there seemed nice, seems like a family owned business. My friend and I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Mutter Paneer with Garlic and Cheese Nan. The curry in the dishes were great with alot of flavor but unfortunately the masala had only like 4 pieces of chicken in all of that curry and the paneer had like 5 small dice size pieces of cheese in the sea of curry! If the dishes had more meat and cheese in it.. would have felt more like a dish.. it just seemed incomplete. After eating the Garlic and cheese nan... definitely order the cheese... its pretty good! Now this is the part why I gave this place 2 stars. After I was pretty much done with my meal, I noticed that the employees were not washing there hands after handling and touching food and other stuff in the cooking area. A customer came in and was joking with one of the cooks... giving him hand shakes and etc... (the customer did not look very clean btw) the employee did not wash his hands after and continued to prepare chicken with his bare hands. I feel like the employees need a review on preparing and handling food. Im sure food preparation is not always best in many restaurants... but atleast I dont have to see it since the food is prepared in the back and then served. Ignorance is bliss sometimes isnt it??? LOL positives: cheap, tastes great negatives: food handling, curry missing meats etc

cheapest indian food in the neighborhood and there are coupons in the monthly blue val-pak junk mailer to make it even cheaper. the food is good and not greasy, and they have roti on the menu wich is nice if you are vegan. there are always banging tunes coming through the wall from esta noche to enjoy, that is if you don't mind the sound of the vibrating metal napkin despenser attached to the wall. you're never rushed out and usually have to ask for your bill or go to the counter to pay when you're ready. also good for take out but sometimes hard to get a hold of on the phone when they are busy.

This is what happens when I rush to order my Sunday Night usual delivery and do not check yelp first. How anyone else can call this Indian/Pakistani EDIBLE food is beyond me - I basically ordered everything that Megan W. ordered and could not even finish based on how incredibly disgusted I was. And what I thought topped it all off is that MAKING IT ALL VERY SPICY doesn't cover up the fact that this to go food is VILE!!!

We always order delivery Indian food from here, and while it may not be the end-all, be-all of Indian/Pakistani food joints, it does the job well and cheaply. Sometimes they take a while to make it all the way out to Glen Park, but they do make it. Anything saag (spinach) is good, less creamy than at other places. The bengan bharta's creaminess varies but is always tasty. Good naan. Chicken tikka masala is good, although I don't order it much -- so much cream. (Do you sense a cream theme to this review?) Always a good option.

Alhamra? I'll have more! $7-10 for a curry. $1-3 for nan. Put that together and you're good! I had the Achar Chicken and the garlic nan, and I devoured it in a minute. Really good! For close to 10 bucks a person, you're getting your money's worth. I was filled and happy all day. I kept thinking about the flavors for hours after. Kinda warm in the restaurant with orangish light. I suspect the heat makes the food taste that much better, but you can decide that for yourself. Staff can be a bit weird, but it doesn't really matter when the food is this good! Just be patient because the food takes time (about 15-20 min from the time you order). It's easy to miss this place, even if you're looking for it. But don't pass this place by. Definitely returning and recommending!

I am only giving this place an "A-OK" because of its lackluster atmosphere and mostly mediocre dishes, however, the Chicken Tikka Masala is OUTSTANDING! If it is a dish you enjoy than this place is more than worth it.

The food was just great, the service brought down that rating significantly. Our party of four waited about 30 minutes to be served water and menus then another 30 minutes to order. There was only one other customer in the entire restaurant at 3:00pm. Went to the resaurant due to them being highlighted on Check Please (PBS) but there are enough OTHER restaurants that are good to go to this restaurant. Sorry but I will not be going back.

For some reason I insist on calling this place "Al Hambra" -- the b just makes it better -- so if you've heard me talking about this place, don't get confused just because I have creative ideas on what the names of restaurants should actually be. I love Indian food, preferably when it is yummy and cheap. Al Hambra is both of these things -- seriously four people can eat here for under $20. I am tempted to go in here every time I walk by it, which is every day, at least twice a day, on my way to BART. Go there.

Besides the spotty service, Alhamra offers fantastic vegetarian options for ridiculously cheap. Vegetarian korma is creamy and smooth as are the paneers. I've never had a crappy dish here--everything tastes rich and spicy and portions are quite generous. Also love that they serve free chai, which has always influenced my decision to not take up their b.y.o.b. policy-- and I'm a motherfucking DRUNK! Not as good as Zante, but 87 x less expensive.

Great value, good food and service. I ordered the chicken tandoori and the lamb curry along with some Nahn (which was a little dark, but not unacceptable). Next time I will the Samosas and the Tikka Masala.

Still waiting for our food - 2.5 hours and counting. We live 10 minutes away. Restaurant now hanging up on us when we call. Driver seems to have no sense of direction - 4 calls to us and still lost. Unforgivable.

I ordered delivery food from this restaurant. It was pretty awful on the whole. The naan seemed like it was the frozen kind that you can get at a grocery store and was cold. The food containers weren't full and the food wasn't very good at that. I know it's not necessarily the restaurant's fault but the delivery service they used was pretty bad as well - she didn't even bother to come to the door to deliver the food but asked me to come out to her car after making me wait more than an hour for delivery. [edit] I see a lot of positive reviews. If you're looking for authentic indo-pak food, this isn't the place but I can see how some people like it anyway.

WOW! This place is fucking rad! Now, first of all, my search for fast-food indian restaurants in San Francisco is certainly an on-going one. I used to live back down in the South Bay, and they were a bit easier to come by, especially in the Santa Clara/Sunnyvale area, where there is a large East Indian population. Generally speaking, though, Indian food seems to always be one of the more expensive cuisines, doesn't it? Not like sushi expensive necessarily, but like, above thai food expensiveness level. Anyways, the first place I was told to try for fast food indian in SF was Pakwan, on 16th between Valencia and Guerrero, and it's, you know...OKAY. it's okay. But after I discovered Alhamra, it's hard for me to suck it up and go to Pakwan, knowing that Alhamra is a three minute walk down the street. Too bad my boyfriend hates it. So mostly I've been going there with my roommate or getting delivery when he is out of town. And about that, the delivery service is right on! You do need to order $15 worth of food to qualify for delivery (which is free, at least in the mission) but it has always come to the house within 45 minutes or less. You end up with a lot of food for $15, because the prices are so good. In fact, my last delivery order lasted me for three meals! YEAH! I'm a pescatarian, so I'm usually mostly interested in the veggie entrees, which run between $4 and $6. Last night I got the vegetable korma and the bengan bharta, an order of rice, and a naan. Again, minus the naan, I am foreseeing two more meals out of it. This was a great 2 item combo, so to speak! I've also had the fish curry, which is spicy but delicate and light in it's own way, and the sag paneer has always been decent. The only thing that is mediocre are the mango lassis...the portion is too small, served in a teeny glass, and not worth $2.50 at all. So I'd say skip that. Otherwise, for the price, this restaurant is AMAZING! really and truly. Nevermind the cheesy 70s "scenes of india" mural that lines the entire left wall. It's never too packed either, and I think it's open late. I've never tried, but I've seen some pretty good-looking lunch specials on the menu. Let me just take one more paragraph to say that, honestly, one of the most mouth-watering things I have tasted in months came out of this restaurant: the sweet naan. It's just plain naan with some ground coconut, sugar and rasians inside, but oh man, it rocks. It combines perfectly with any spicy curry for a awesome flavor explosion! If you try one naan, try this one!

Pretty good cheap eats in a convenient location. The Chicken Tikka Masala is spicy and creamy without being over spices. I hate it when there's too much cumin. The samosas have a delicious filling but are often cooked better in the afternoon when the experienced cooks are at the helm. Sometimes in the evening the samosas are a little doughy when the young guy is at the stove. Overall, a a pleasant experience!

This place gets 5 stars not for being the best Indian food, but because they do what they do exceptionally well. We've gotten delivery about 4 times in the last month and did a pick-up once. The delivery 3/4 times was ridiculously fast (we're talking 30 minutes from the time we ordered till it reached us at the south end of Bernal Heights). One time was slow, but that's occasionally expected. I'll agree with the reviews of the dining room - quiet, creepy, desolate - found this out when we did a pick-up. But no worries - get it delivered and chomp it down while you watch Project Runway or America's Next Top Model (these shows seem to make the food taste better. trust me.) This is what Jon M. and I always order. We always have leftovers. and it's always under $20 before tip! Vegetable Korma Aloo Gohbi Garlic, Onion, or Spiced Potato Naan Raita Vegetable Pakora Side of rice oh! also drink Fresca with this meal, just sayin' is all...

We ordered delivery from here for the second time and LOVED the chicken biryani and thought the CTM was okay too. I've found it difficult to find Pakistani food in the city as it's mostly Indian (especially for delivery) but this place is pretty authentic and would've been on my speed dial if it weren't for the explosive diarrhea and abdominal cramping I have been experiencing all afternoon. Never have I had such agonizing diarrhea and I'm a born and bred Pakistani, so that's saying a lot! I hate to give them such a bad rating but no biryani is worth these shits. Oh and I just read David G's post below about the cook scratching his crotch. Great. At least I know what caused it now.

I called and placed an order for delivery on a Saturday night. The person on the phone was a bit rude, but told me that delivery would be in 45 minutes. Delivery was about on time. I ordered the chicken vindaloo and aloo naan. When I order chicken vindaloo, I prep the rolaids. I like really spicey food, but it takes a toll. After eating this vindaloo, I could put the rolaids away. A bit bland and not much spice at all. The sauce was oily and and thin. The redemption is everything is very cheap. You definitely get what you pay for at Alhamra.

The chicken meat ball dish was horrible and extremely salty. The chicken tikka masala was just room temperature when it was serve. The chicken was added and tasted different from the source. Saw this place from eye on the bay but it was disappointing when we tried. The bread was the best of all. Not worth of going back. Plenty better indian food else where.

We were so impressed with take-out that an eat-in experience was called for. The service was friendly and I didn't think the food could get any better, but it did. I ordered the vegetarian lunch special and my husband got the lamb curry. He said that the meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The garlic naan was the best I've ever had. Absolutely addicting. Spiciness was perfect for me. The restroom was spotless (a little test I often give restaurants.) Call me a regular.

Update: I LOVE coming to eat in the restaurant. It's super casual and the servers are very friendly. I love how the dining room is dark and on the hopping nights, you can hear the music blast through the wall from the club next door. It's not fancy, but definitely a great place to grab a bite. *************************** We got order-in from them last night and the delivery took a long time - around 1 to 1-1/2 hrs. BUT the food was very yummy! We had: -Chicken Vindaloo (chicken with hot spicy sauce and potatoes) -Bindi Ghosht (lamb with okra) -nan and garlic nan -chawal (seasoned basmati rice) The Bindi Ghosht was so YUMMY! It was pretty spicy too. I like the garlic nan - it's nan stuffed with garlic, it's good! There are definitely more items I want to try too so I can't wait to order from them again (but order way before you're gonna be hungry!)

What brought me in to this place, was that the sign said "Halal" Pretty good value overall. I had the goat curry and sag paneer. The goat curry had a lot of sauce, and not a huge amount of meat, but enough. I also ordered the naan, a bargain at $1. But I didn't like how the waiter gave us two orders when I only ordered one. However, my dining companion said the waiter repeated the order back at "2 orders of naan" and I didn't correct him. Well, I didn't hear him say that. Whatever. The naan was tasty, and we ended up taking the extra order to go. I also had the lamb samosas, which were stuffed with lots of meaty goodness, but I swear the dough was of the deep fried eggroll skin variety (not the usual dough I associate with samosas). The veggie biriyani was flavorful and had lots of chunks of fresh veggies in it (not bagged frozen veggies).

This place was surprisingly good. We were wandering around the Mission looking for a cheap Indian place that took credit cards and - lo and behold - we found Al Hamra. What really cemented our decision was the view of freshly cooked skewers of tandoori chicken hanging by the window. The chicken did not disappoint - it was very moist and flavorful. Everything else was good too and really filling. 4 dishes, 2 orders of naan, and rice for four added up to about $40. Not too shabby.

Like everyone else, we came here after seeing it on Check Please, Bay Area. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Veggie Samosas, rice and naan. The Chicken Tikka Masala was really yummy, but not as thick as I hoped and the samosa's were just ok. The mint chutney and tamarind sauce also tasted watered down. The reason I give it a 1 star is because it gave me really bad food poisoning 30 minutes after finishing my plate. It was torture and for that reason I will not be coming back here.

There are better Indian restaurants, but none in this price range. For the price range, Alhamra is the best in San Francisco, and if I don't give it 5 stars, that's only because it is not a 5 star restaurant--with 5 star prices. I always get my deliveries very fast, but then, I DON'T USE GRUBHUB. Stop using Grubhub, pick up the phone, and call them. Tell them directly where you live and how to get there and how spicy you want your food. (The people who are saying the food is bland did not ask for spicy food, because every time that I have asked them to up the spice, they did.)

I would say this place is more of a 1.5 instead of a 2. My mom wanted to try this place out after seeing rave reviews on "Check Please", and since it was her birthday it gave us a good reason to go out for dinner. My mother wasn't very fond of the neighborhood of the restaurant, which isn't to per say the restaurant's fault. There was also blaring music coming through the walls behind our table due to a club or bar being next door. I made light of the situation by showing my brothers my good ol' fist-pumping moves I've been learning from the Jersey Shore, but my mom wasn't amused. Anyways, the service was not outstanding, the waiter didn't speak English very well, which made the ordering process a bit awkward. The waiter never checked in with us either, he would only come to the table if I called him over. The food was alright, I have definitely had better Indian food elsewhere. However, I think it was pretty disappointing to my mom, because she was expecting something fantastic based on what she saw on TV. Another set off was the dishes came to us super spicy, when we asked for mild. The naan was also inconsistent, we placed a second order for more naan, and the second time around it was a bit dry. I think we all left the restaurant not quite satisfied. But, my biggest issue with this place is what happened the days following our visit. My mom told me that the restaurant added an additional $3 charge to our bill. I believe my mom tipped them a precise 15%, considering our party of 7 people, but I guess they decided to add the extra $3 to the amount without notifying us. Even though it's only $3, I think my mom was pretty offended by it, based on the principle if she's signing for the amount she wrote then that should be what she's paying. I did mention the gratuity may have been 18%, and she responded that regardless they should have told us, which I completely agree with as well. In the end, not a place any of us will be returning to.

One of my all time favorite Indian restaurants. The ambiance may leave something to be desired, but the food is so good and cheap it more than makes up for it. When I lived in SF I got delivery from Alhamra all the time, and every time I go back to visit I make it a point to eat here. The samosas are huge and super moist and flavorful, and the aloo mutter just might be my last meal if I were on death row.

THE BEST INDIAN IN THE CITY!!! I came back from London a year ago from vacation with a major, newly found, taste for Indian; so I looked all over the city and found this "hole in the wall" in between a cafe and a night club on 16th by work. It is sooo good and the owner is a very nice guy... Many down to earth but sometimes yuppyish people regularly eat here so it's always a mellow crowd. My friends, parents, and some family pick up once or twice a week and always get the same thing.. Chicken tikka masala, aloo(potato) nan, and basmatti rice and it NEVER gets old. It's like a treat every time we get it and whenever i'm hungry and think of it my mouth waters and I start calling people to see who wants some. Also they are open till 11 so if you need a late fix of indian enjoy. I must HIGHLY recommend the CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA with POTATO NAN - TO DIP, trust me it is like "edible crack" as someone likes to say... You won't be disappointed!

My gf and I eat here about once a week or so. It's really cheap and fairly tasty. Though this isn't the kind of place you go to for the decor. Sometimes the service is good; sometimes it's slow. Always friendly, though. Delivery!!

Anyone coming in here for good service is a damn moron. You come here because the food is cheap, and pretty damn good. I've had the chicken boti tikka, samosas, pakora, and chana masala here. I have absolutely nothing to complain about. The boti tikka is served (authenitcally, according to my Pakistani wife) on a bed of onion slivers. Some nights its spicier than others, but the chicken is always moist, flavorful and often served with just enough char on the outside. The samosas usually have a bit more spice than other indopak places. The pakoras are good. The naan isn't standout, but pretty good. Their tiny bathroom is also remarkably clean, something not usually found at these places. they even have a lota (Go ask a Pakistani.) They also have ridiculously cheap chicken biryani. Usually on special for $5.95. I don't care for biryani in general, but I'm assured its good. Two people can eat here for around $17 bucks. I can't complain about that.

Often overlooked for nearby Pakwan or Shalimar, I'll never understand why. It was just a shell of a place til a year or two ago when they did a tasteful painting of the place. It's usually crowded but mostly made up of regulars, some first timers are turned off by the noise of the trashy and loud Esta Noche who's music shakes the shared wall at all hours. Not always the most friendly folk from North India, they make terrific food at a price that simply canNot be beat. I'm concerned for the sweet young chinese woman who works there as she always seems frightened for her life. The fear doesn't translate to the food. Its brazen!, it's spicy and full of taste. I've got them programmed in my phone though other Indian restaurants are closer to home, they are definitely reliable for good taste to take home.

I love meeting up for dinner with my friend who lives in the mission. It is always quite an adventure. So a week or two prior we went to the infamous Pakwan which we all know and love, but this night it was extremeley packed. As we were walking I told my friend that I read a review that said they didn't wash their silverware...ewww. So we opted for Alhamra. We sadly glanced at Pakwan, and moved 1 block up to Alhamra. On this particular Wednesday night Alhamra was not too packed except for one big party and a few other diners. We were seated right away at a nice clean big table. We looked over the menu and decided what we were getting. Mmm Chicken Tikka Masala, rice, naan, and a cauliflower/potatoe dish can't quite remember the Indian name for that....oh well sue me why dontcha. Oh wait... I remember.. yes, it is Aloo Gobhi. Although we couldn't go to Pakwan, we decided that our food here at Alhamra would be of better quality and that we would be eating with clean silverware haha. The food took a little longer than expected, but we were in no rush since we were dancing in our seats to some hot Pakistani tunes that was playing on a late 90s boom box haha. The Chicken Tikka Masala is always yummy and the naan was delish. My vegetarian dish was yum, but a little too spicy. The rice was amazing. Amazing! Soon, my friend and I were stuffed and waiting for the check. The check never came so we soon sunk into what we call a "Food Coma" you know (slang term for the lethargic state induced by overindulgence in carbohydrate- laden food). So of course I was full, but for some reason I was in a trance like state of euphoria so I continued eating the naan. My friend was laughing because she knew I was completely full, but continued to eat. Finally I snapped out and said "where is our check." We are never getting our check. So we asked our waiter if we could get our check. He said, FINE OK. We were like huh? The good thing about this place is that our check came to like $15.40 or something like that. Pretty sweet deal!!! Not only did we have great food, but we also sunk into food comas, not to mention the Pakistani music. So if you want cheap and tastey Indian food, then I suggest you go to Alhamra, well that is only if Pakwan is packed. Although Pakwan might not wash their silverware I will still take my chances eating there. However, Alhamra comes in a close second. I will definitley come back here for seconds.

after getting their coupons/menu in the value pak several times, we decided to order from them on a recent rainy night. the curry was not bad, but there was so much oil sitting on top of the curry. in fact, the container was exactly 1/3 oil. maybe it was an off night for alhamra, and maybe that's the norm. lamb 3 1/2 stars chicken 3 1/2 stars veg curry 3 1/2 stars spooning the oil out of the container... 0 stars. we would order again, BUT ONLY if we were feeling cheap.

This place isn't trying to win your business with their service, but the food is good and cheap. The vegetarian dishes are good, but not spicy enough for me. The awesome thing is you can BYOB. Three tables including ours had 24 oz. beer cans to go with our dinner. Shockingly, they gave us a pitcher of water but no glasses. I think they expected us to cup our hands together and drink from our palms... I hate palm water.

Next time you're on your way to Pakwan, go to Alhamra instead. Same prices, but a much larger menu.

Holy crap, the spice level is off the charts here! I consider myself fairly tolerant of spice in my curry, but Al Hamra's idea of spicy is exceptional. Good thing my stomach was quite pleased and settled after my Chicken Curry (especially fortunate given that my next stop was SFO to catch a red-eye flight). The plate was huge, the other flavors came through somewhat, and the price was right. But I think I'll go for the Tikka Masala next time, which will hopefully tamp the spice level down to what I expected with the Curry.

We stumbled across this place one night while just walking around looking for someplace, anyplace to grab a nice meal. It's bare bones. We sat, a guy came with the menus and a pitcher of water. We ordered naan, appetizers and main dishes and rice. It was all great. Fantastic naan, big portions, fresh and just fine unintrussive service. We like it when the wait staff just takes the order, delivers and disappears. If you want something, you can flag 'em down. Will be back, the foods top notch, service adequate and atmosphere friendly and comfortable. Just right.

Alhamra is a great value. The curries, vindaloos and saags are all good and at their prices, you can eat out every night. The naans are made more like pakistani/afgani breads which go great with kabobs but are a little too chewy for indian curries. A good indian naan needs to be soft, a little buttery and have a little sweetness to it. The quality of the basmati is a little lacking as well but who cares, it's cheap and tastes good.

This Place Has Great Indian Food. The SWEET NAAN Bread Is The Best. They Make Awesome Curry (all kinds), And Any Of Vindaloo and Sag Items Are Great To Try. You Can Dine In Or Take Out Its Great Either Way.

If I could translate the sounds coming from my stomach after eating their food, that would be my whole review. I swear it sounded Yiddish. It will be difficult, but let's go back to a nite I'd rather not remember. Being the lazy asses we are, a friend I are a-hungrin' fer some curry, yet we don't want to move. Alhamra: convenient and cheap delivery that will subdue our craving. Food comes, we dig in. -Naan, good. -Samosas, almost too spicy to eat. -Chicken tikka masala meat: good and yummy. Sauce: very thin and off color, flavorless except for INFERNO SPICE. -Palak paneer: weird/old tasting and chewy spinach, equipped also with INFERNO SPICE. We were so hungry we continued to eat, as painful as it was, but we gave it our best shot and we still couldn't and wouldn't finish it. Something in me dies a little when food goes in the trash.

Yay! Good cheap Indian that delivers! Life is good...Not sure where the bad reviews are coming from; we've ordered in twice in the past few weeks and everyone was surprised and delighted with the food. I've given up on saag paneer in recent years, but a friend ordered it, and it actually looked and tasted like spinach! Yum. In general, it's on the spicy side, but their naan is generously sized so it works out perfectly.

    (4)
  • Andrew L.

Pretty mediocre Indian/Pakistani food. The Tikka Masala was way too runny and watery and the naan was too much like ordinary white bread. I will say that the spinach was quite good, however. Good if you're desperate, but not if you have the 2 minutes to walk up the street to Pakwan.

When they first opened the dining room was perhaps the most depressing environment I have ever sojourned in. The ceiling was low, the walls bare, except for a creepy piece of wild horses "art". Harsh lighting and an overall "unfinished strip mall squat" dcor. To enter the door was soul crushing, mind numbing and only slightly less depressing than the broken one wheeled granny cart with a single well used crutch in it that I saw laying on the sidewalk outside one time --- pathos galore. Yet I kept coming back, the food was that good, that affordable, and there was always take out. They slowly upgraded the morbid interior and I have to appreciate that pluck. Now they have a nice mural and better lighting --- it's still not homey, but it's tolerably pleasant. The food is still excellent, I recommend the tandori lamb or chicken, but it's all pretty good. I was also pleased with there sweet naan. Al Hamara doesn't have a liquor license, but they don't seem to mind if you brown bag it.

    - Food: Poor to Average The Chicken Tikka Masala was, as I feared, an Italian-tasting spicy tomato sauce. Not a bad one, but not a good tikka masala. The daal had no spice, in fact I don't know if either dish had any garam masala in it at all. The daal re

I told my older sister about this place because I'm such a fan of their chicken curry, naan bread and samosas. So as usual in this area parking is scarce. So we go around the block a couple of times, and lucky enough we found parking near by. Me, my sister, and her bf go in and we seat ourselves. We decide on regular and garlic naan, chicken curry, lamb sag, tikka masala, and the spiced rice with chicken thing, which I can't remember the name right about now. It was the first time I tried the lamb, which came with spinach. I thought that one was really good the meat was tender, and the spinach had a really good burst of pleasant flavor. The tikka masala had a sauce that was a little bit too rich for me, but the flavor was up to par.The hallway was dark and it creeped my sister out. They should put a light there because it does get dark. The service was unusually slow when I visted this time. Not to mention our waiter didn't say 'thank you' when we were leaving even if we said thanks. They still need to work on their common courtesy, but for the good food and low prices it can't bother you that much. I'll still go back though, and this time I more samosas, because those things are addicting as hell!

This food is spicy! I was warned so my friend and I ordered mild which I would say is medium on most scales. We ordered Nan, Chana Masala, Saag Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala. I would say the food is so so, but dipping Nan into the Tikka Masala sauce while watching the premier of ANTM was amazing. And delivery only took twenty minutes...doorbell rang while Tyra was making an ass out of herself~sigh. Remember the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air? She tricked us.

I was stomping around the Mission today and I decided to check this place out based off of the Yelp reviews. I've got to say, this is my kind of curry dive. An unpretentious paper-napkin sort of place where I can throw down a ten and leave stuffed with a completely legit lamb vindaloo with rice and good naan. The vindaloo was quite hot, but it was just about right for my tastes. More importantly under the spicyness, the sauce had a good depth of muttonous flavor. I made sure I saved enough naan to scoop up every last bit!

the worst indian food i've had in the city. portions are small. food is spicy and that's it. i guess they felt that people think indian food is supposed to be spicy and not tasty. went w/ a few co-workers and we ordered CTM (chicken tikka masala), lamb vindaloo, chicken biryani, tandoori fish, bengan bartha and saag paneer. only standout dish was the tandoori fish which was quite good but nothing like lahore karahi's version. the naan too was of decent quality. these two things alone give the place 2 stars. everything else like i said was spicy for the sake of being spicy. i guess it's catering to the "indian food is SPICY" crowd and i guess it delivers in that fashion. also, a word about the restaurant itself. this place is down right scary. we walked in and the lunch lady behind the counter sorta nodded for us to sit down. at first i was like wow we're gonna be served unlike pakwan. in retrospect, it seems that they should focus on making food rather than providing waiter service. the music is here is dreary as is the overall atmosphere. avoid coming here and go down the street to pakwan for a MUCH better food experience.

UPDATE: If I could give zero stars I would... I was a loyal fan for over two years and swore by Alhamra. However after taking over an hour and a half on a Sunday night to finally reach my house, with no call about being late, and even a couple check0in calls from me, the guy finally arrived. When speaking with the "home office" I was offered no discount, no apology, and no acknowledgement of this bein a problem. So with this I say goodbye to Alhamra and good riddance. I swear by this place for great delivery. I've never eaten in the restaurant, but the delivery is great! I'm not well versed in Indian food, but I love the Tandoori chicken here, and the tikka is silky. A Friday night in, a few good beers, and some Al Hamra delivery will start a weekend off right and take away the blues. Definitely give it a try!

If you like 10 alarm spicy food like I do then Al Hamra is the spot. Everything from the Chicken Tikka to the Lamb Dhal is great and even some of the out standing special special they have. This weekend I had the Chicken Komra and wow! Who would have thought fire roasted tomatoes and spcice could be so good. Oh I always get the sweet nan and the garlic nan they are just to die for. The sweet nan is kind of like dessert in a way. If you haven't had it check it out. Eating there is cool but I normally get it to go because it hard to find parking some nights.

They have been off lately. This used to be THE place we would order from when we felt like treating ourselves to some delicious and bad for you food.... but the masala was watery, the spinch is way too greasy and the bread was cold. The delivery times have doubled as well... let's not turn into the hell that is Zante! Man oh man I miss my slightly above average, tasty, quick Tandoori.

I love this place. The first time my brother and I went, we was like let's try something different. The first time we ate there has left an lasting impression on us. I tried almost everything on the menu. I have my favorites such as, Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb curry, beef curray, chicken curray, shrimp sagwala, rice, and the sweet nan. The food is made to order, which means its fresh and very delicious. I just can't order one or two items. I have to order half the menu, because I love to taste everything. You can request how spicy you like your food. As for me, I like spicy. I love the fact that they advertise that its halal. So, no pork and no alcohol.

This places serves up big fat pieces of naan, tasty samosas...and unfortunately watery curry. Quality was on par with the naan-n-curry's in the city...except that they deliver.

Got delivery from here on a saturday evening... they said it'd take 40 minutes from mission to the house in castro, but it took much shorter. maybe 15, 20 min. so that was good... the food was not good. the mango lassis were just ick. small and ick. i had a lamb korma and it was just soupy and not great. but better than jesse's spicy lamb thing, which wasnt spicy at all. nothing was spicy. his was just oily and water. the good thing was.... the naan. big, yummy naan. so eat naan and good service, but otherwise skip this place i'd not go back. i cant say how the eat in dinner might be.

If you ever want to try some decent Indian food on the way cheap, try Al Hambra in the Mission at 16th & Mission, next to Esta Noche. I recommend Chicken Boti Tikka (chicken cooked on a skewer served over chopped and lightly grilled onions). Get some Naan Bread, whatever sounds enticing to you, and some rice of course. I usually try at least one veggie curry dish, maybe something with peas and potatoes (Saag Paneer?). Al Hambra lacks in decor and the restroom for the guys is the smallest I've ever seen (no joke), but the price is right. And I think they let you bring your own alcohol since they don't serve it themselves.

worst food poisoning I have ever gotten in my life. I would have gone to the hospital if I could make it but I was on my own and suffered a solid 24 hours before it let up. Now I cant even stomach the site or smell of Indian food. Thanks Alhamra.

  • Zachariah B.

The food was quite good, and the price is pretty amazing. I kinda dug the dark ambience, altho there was a TV present, but it was pretty quiet. Located near 16th and Mission, the crack hoes and heroin were easily available, so that's an upside.

Hrm, it's funny, reading all these reviews and noticing the huge difference in interpretation of what Indian Food should taste. Depending on one's palate, tolerance to spice, and how this type of food was introduced to you from the beginning, you're either going to really like it...or you're just going to be disgusted. I give it a 4 stars based on convenience, my budget, and really, it's quite tasty for the price. Perhaps I went during a good time. Who knows. I've tried Pakwan before which is also just as outstanding but in a different way. I think Pakwan tailors to more of the "American" palate

alhamra serves up some very good, non-oily, tasty indian/pakistani food. we' been there about 5 times. really enjoyed the tandoori fish, chicken tandoori, and seekh kabab (lamb). the naan was crispy and puffy and fresh. the place is nothing fancy but it is clean. the bathroom is hard to manuver around in cos it's so small though. the staff is always friendly. they don't serve alcohol, but allow you to bring in your own. it's just so hard to resist having a nice tall beer with your food, so i bring my own usually from the liquor store on the corner. if you're looking for a casual place with great indian food in the city, alhamra delivers!

Worst Indian food I have ever had. I'd eat naan from there again. Nothing else.

    (1)
  • Amy K.

Perfectly acceptable Pakistani food. I've had some better than average experiences, but also some rather disappointing dishes. The bottom line is that there's no reason to go to Alhamra when there are so many exceptional Pakistani joints in this city. Pakwan is only a block away. Unless you can't bear the line, or if you want to charge it (unlike Pakwan, they take cards here).

ew. this place is gross. i consider myself quite authoritative on north indian food, and this is among the worst i've ever had. the mango lassi was DAY GLO ORANGE. this is not normal people. your mango lassi should not be that color. if you're in the neighborhood, walk down the street to pakwan. they're decent. and if you know of good indian delivery in the mission hook me up!

love alhamra! i order delivery from alhamra about once every 2 weeks - would order more often if my significant other was into indian food. i haven't actually eaten in the restaurant before - only had delivery from there. it's inexpensive, spicy, and consistently tasty. favorite dishes: fish tandoori, chicken tikka masala (if i'm feeling very indulgent), and sag paneer. yes, it's the standards, but the chicken tikka masala has some type of smoked chicken breast and the sauce is soooo creamy. oh - and the chicken vindaloo is amazing too. i get that if i don't feel like ingesting the 2 pints of cream that is the chicken tikka masala.

Slow delivery, shitty food. Haven't eaten in the restaurant but why would I after that meal? Keep walking, Pakwan's on the right.

  • Stephen H.

AaaahlHamra....Well, honestly not as good as Pakwan, but they do deliver, if you have a few hours to wait. I would recommend just about any of the veggie dishes (chana masala, bengan bharta, mushroom mutter, gohbi, palak...) and samosas. Ask for extra spicy. It will be extra spicy. Avoid the biryani- usually overly dry (I think they make it early in the day, and stick it under a heat lamp...). Kababs are pretty decent. The staff can be quiet (even surly-faced at times), but seat yourself, and take the check up to the front to avoid a wait.

  • Ann E.

I don't understand why anyone would say anything bad about the food. Yes, the service and the ambiance BLOW but for carry out and/or delivery Indian, there isn't a place in the Mission that can touch it. For Indian, it's cheap, and it's really really good - spicy for some, I imagine, but not crazy - and you can ask for it mild. Just be patient with the slackers behind the counter and you will come out satisfied.

  • Bill J.

Very good for what they do -- ridiculously cheap and fast delivery. Is it better than Naan/Curry? Nah. But it's the best Indian delivery that hits the Castro/Mission that I know of. If you don't want to cook and are hungry for something delicious while you're watching American Idol or Law & Order, it's perfect.

my friend and i ate in and were treated to very friendly prompt service. the mango lassi was spot on and not too sweet. quality wise, this place may only be a couple steps above naan&curry but i love my indian (food) unfussy. it definitely fulfilled the craving without raiding the bank. full stomach + full wallet = happy nicole.

Alhamra has turned into so much of a disappointment I've been moved to the point of actually letting people know. We used to love this place, great channa masala, and saag paneer that made my wife hungry just thinking about it. To top it all off, they deliver to our house. Well, not anymore. I don't know if they've gone through a change in ownership, a mid-life crisis, or if they are just angry at the world, but they're food and service is abysmal. Last night it took 2 hours for a delivery, during which the owner hung up on me twice when I call to ask about it. So, with 6 people foolishly waiting to eat we accepted the order when it finally arrived only to realize the entire order wasn't there. But they did include utensils - one fork. WTH? Of course, when I called back to complain about the order, guess what happened. You got it. Hang up number three. At the end of the day, I might have been able to overlook the delivery fiasco if the food was as good as it used to be, but unfortunately it wasn't anywhere close. Avoid Alhamra. If you randomly pick any curry house in the city you're bound to have a better experience.

I placed a delivery order at 6:15, but had my doubts since it seemed like the guy taking my order wasn't sure what I'd ordered. About a half hour later, this was confirmed when he called back saying they didn't have mushrooms (I'd ordered Achar Chicken, which has peppers and pickles, but no 'shrooms); he then reconfirmed what I'd ordered and said it would be there in 15-20 minutes. Another half hour later, I called back asking where the order was, and he said it'd be about 15 or 20 minutes (this was starting to sound familiar). At about 7:45 the driver called from 16th & Mission and said they'd be there in "about 5 minutes". At 8 the food arrived, lukewarm. It was generally ok (TG for microwaves), but the Achar Chicken didn't have any pickles or roasted peppers and the Aloo Palak was definitely missing the promised peas. Although their "Valpak" fliers promise quick delivery, it seems more like they're trying to discourage it (who can blame them for that given the price of gas!).

I had a lunch special here, vegetarian 2 dishes plus rice and naan lunch for $5.50. Super cheap for okay curry. I asked them to make it as spicy as they could, and got a little bit of heat. The dishes I got were chick peas in red curry sauce and a saag. Will have to try a meat special soon.

Tasty, affordable Indian. Quick delivery. The Tandoori Chicken was spicy and tender, the Saag Paneer was spicy and flavorful. My only issue was that they didn't deliver enough green sauce.

Good delivery for the price. Spicy Bite is usually a bit less greasy and better, but Alhamra is cheaper and the guy on the phone always says "hello my friend!" I think they have a good chef and a mediocre one, but I don't know which one works which nights.

Well priced, delicious garlic naan that will make your breath stink and spicy. I'm still skeptical though b/c i hate eating indian at a restaurant. I kept it simple this time with veg biriyani and dal saag...so we'll have to see if I eat there another time.

This review is based solely on delivery--I've never actually been to the restaurant. Delivery-definite 3 stars. The food is always super hot, tasty, and shows up in no time! They usually say 45 min to an hour--but I think it's definitely closer to 25-30 minutes. A lot of the basics are good...chicken tikki masaala, veggie samosas, and tandoori chicken. Skip chana masaala though--very greasy.

I like this place alot. Granted I have not had a ton of Indian/Pakistani food and I definitely have not gone to all the trendy places that so many other people have mentioned, but i will tell you this much. This place rocks. From the dude who must be dying of heat behind those ovens, to the over-sized woman 9who prolly owns the place) who comes out and only takes orders occasionally, to the hispanic (prolly mexican ) prep cook singing rancheras in the back while cutting up the chicken, This place has a charm that can only be associated with a hole in the wall in a shitty neighbrhood in a big city. the food is good for plates that check in at less than ten bucks. I mean seriously, I took two drunk friends and we 'hella grubbed' for something like 25 bucks. My only complaint is that the tendoori chicken is a little on the dry side. Other than that I would have to recomend the lamb tikka masala. It is always delish. And definitely be sure to get an order of naan. It rocks to scoop up the masala... don't listen to those hater players who don't like this place becasue it is not teir favorite place. I say check it out and be pleasantly surprised.

Excellent - I order the chef's special for $7.25: tikka masala, choice of veggie curry, naan, and rice. Way less greasy than Naan/Curry.

The food is great and cheap and the service is slow and irritating. The interior is bland but cleanish. I have never seen it crowded either but I found the food pretty great for the price. I got tandoori chicken, Dal masala, nan and my friend had tikka masala. I recommend all of them. probably more of a 3 1/2 restaurant but whatever... it's good.

This is the kind of place you are supposed to find in the Mission. Cheap, gritty, service with a scowl. They list a lunch special menu, but don't seem to be willing to give you the cheap price unless you ask. Of course, it's already so cheap that it really matters little. Three vegetable dishes with naan and rice will go less than $20. BUT the food is fine. When the regular guy is cooking, it's nice and hot. The eggplant is great, and the dal saag and chana masala are good too. I had a "special" chicken dish one day that wasn't worth the price; it seems like a lot of the menu consists of putting different things in a particular sauce (cf. paneer) so I don't know that the "specials" are that special. Haven't tried the tandoori. The naan are fine, and if you like garlic naan they seem to lay it on pretty thick. As to comparisons with Pakwan, our one visit there was highly underwhelming. We were nearly overcome with ammonia from the mopping taking place during our lunch, but had many, many flies buzzing around our window to keep us company. I don't think any of the staff will be getting a job on Singapore Air very soon- if you're avoiding Al-Hamra because they're not friendly enough, Pakwan isn't going to bowl you over either.

Only place that could make me love indian food. The vegatarian lunch, with Rice, 2 vegatarians entrees and naan is a steal at 6 bucks.

i went once. decent place, pretty clean, i like that i can see them making the food in front of me (open kitchen on one side of the restaurant). we had paneer tikka masala and naan. good, but not great. i would return, but one of my favorite places for the above in just across the street.

the food is really good. spicy means SPICY. my best recommendation, however, would be to eat there. DO NOT order for delivery from al hamra; on no less than three seperate occasions, it took their driver(s) more than 1.5 hours (once, it took close to 2.5!) to bring my order, which was ice cold when it arrived. i called the restaurant after abount an hour each time to find out what the deal was, and the impression i got each time was that no one was really going to find out & tell me what the deal was and when i could expect my order (note: i live less than 1 mile from al hamra). i was always pleasant, but was hung up on after my 4th call for a status report. anyway, great food. awful, horrible delivery.

when this place started out a few years ago, it was rather good. authentic flavours, fresh ingredients - a good addition to the then high-flying pakwan. i visited often. a year down the road, they transformed themselves into a run-of-the-mill indian restaurant. far from the real thing and honestly, quite disgusting. a year ago, a friend mentioned that their quality had improved again. i went back... and so it had. it stayed that way for about 4-6 months. i've been getting food delivered from them every now and then... but now, the quality is on the blink. seriously. i had to trash the seekh kabaabs and the veggie over the weekend. the chutney was floating green in water. i won't be patronizing them again. and with the demise of pakwan quality, san francisco is again bereft of quality indian/pakistani food. my loss.

  • Christopher J.

i watched the guy cooking pull out the "Insta-garam" style packet from behind the counter and watched him put it right into my damn curry. i make various indian dishes at home, and after this incident i knew this wasnt going to be a plesant, vibrant example of culinary expertise. this is right before i went veg, and i think this is one of the culprits- the chicken looked like 6 century old battered prunes, and tasted as such. i left half of the order, and begrugingly payed the anus spewers behind the reg. injustice, once again.....

  • Hmmm W.

First, I have to admit that the service at this place can be pretty horrible. I often order take out and sometimes they won't even pick up my call. Other times they will place me on hold for five minutes. It's still worth it because I'm addicted to their chicken tikka masala. People complain that it's too watery, almost like something you'd find at an Italian restaurant. It's definitely different, but it tastes amazing. On top of that the chicken is better quality than at Pakwan down the street. The lunch specials are pretty good too and cheap.

I absolutely love this place! only place in san francisco that i've ever heard of being recommended by actual indian people. A lot of the reviews talk about the service being bad, but i've been going here for years and the service has always been great. sure it takes the staff a few visits to warm up to you, but once you're in.. MAN ITS LIKE GOLD. occasionally alhamra sends out 20% coupons in the mail and my boyfriend and his family have one. we use it all the time, but sometimes we do forget to bring it. BUT if you're a regular (like my boyfriend and his family) and in with the owners and their kids (the place is run by a family) they'll put on the 20% without the coupon! also, the chicken tikka masala is actually out of this world. i've eaten at naan n curry, roti, and pakwan and there's no comparison. its perfectly seasoned, cooked to perfection, and has the perfect level of spice. YUMMM! I'd also recommend the dal masala or chana masala if you want to add some veggies to your dinner. The rice also blows naan n curry away. All in all, this place is pretty amazing. sure you some times have to get up to go get a pitcher of water or a glass, but you do that at naan n curry anyways, right? and a little known fact: they expect you to come pay at the register, duh! its been like that for years. think of it this way.. going to the register gives you a chance to talk to them and get to know them. who knows.. maybe next time you'll get a discount :D

yes, the wait is long, but it is just so good. the chicken tikka takes a star off - as it is really good but almost all sauce. but oh lord the veggies just rock my world. okra like you have never known.

i don't know about the atmosphere and i don't know that i would necessarily want to sit down and be served here.. and i don't know what was in my dish exactly, but the eggplant surprise i had to go was SO GOOD! mmmmm.

Hands down still the best indian food we've had here in the states, in 8 years. You can't beat the taste--for the small percentage of us who have prised ourselves away from Pakwan, Alhamra is an addictive secret. The staff are modest and super sweet, they are the kind of small business I want to support. This is a great casual place to eat at after some happy hour drinks on a Friday night. They deliver too until 10:30pm!! It's worth the tikka taste competition so give them a try :)

I'm really not that picky. But when our regular indian delivery spot was closed we ordered from here. I'd seen it on check please....thought it would be good....wrong. Worst Indian I've ever had...brutal. And i have had some pretty bad to mediocre indian in this town. The samosa was the best part, and i don't normally even like them...The nan was terrible, but that could happen on to go orders I guess. Watery chutney, flavorless riata, and the dishes we got were so very oily I decided after a few bites to just give up. What a waste. Wine for dinner it is! Don't make the same mistake we did.

Yesterday myself, husband and sister came in for dinner. We ordered the tandoori chicken(breast) nan & garlic nan, basmati rice, chicken tikka masala & lamb tandoori. The dining is nice and clean with native paintings on the wall and on the table. Our waiter was a young guy he was cool & friendly. As for the tandoori dishes they were served on a sizzling hot plate with wood sides so you can't burn yourself. I enjoyed my chicken it had a nice orange color on the outside with all white meat inside with just enough "burnt" edges. The flavor was mild not too spicy just right. I've had better nan but overall we enjoyed our first visit here and may return + the prices are inexpensive.

This is a simple and straightforward Indian restaurant. Food is what you expect, the dishes that we had were ok, not bad but also not excellent. The prices are cheap. However the food can be quite spicy even if you don't ask for it, so be careful.

My friend used to go here a lot in a large group all toting BYOB's and ordering two hundred dollars worth of food. He took me last week (we brought a 12-pack) and I experienced the juiciest 1/2 chicken tandorri I have ever had. I also liked that sitting in the back meant it was quiet-because all the cooking is up in front for all to see. It was a real mixed crowd of some dates, some people on computers etc. I have been to most of the Indian restaurants in SF and some in the East Bay, and this place was bargain.

I love this place. I get their delivery often, and have eaten there a couple of times. Dining, it's clean, and they're attentive. The food? CRACKIN! Some of my favorite Indian food in the bay area. My favorite of theirs is the Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer. I've never eaten anything there, and disliked it. I highly recommend

A great restaurant if you love good indian food! I haven't tried anything that I haven't loved yet. The staff is friendly and the vibe is mellow. Being muslim owned they serve no alcohol, but Great News! They're cool with BYOB. Can't go wrong with that! Not too pricey and and the samosas are as good as the Tikki Masala! Awesome.

This restaurant makes amazing food - the Chicken Tikka is deliciously spicy and if you order naan, it comes right out of the oven. Their naan is probably the best I've ever had. The curry sauce is also great for dipping naan in. My only complaint is with the service - you have to be fairly aggressive in getting their attention after you get your order, as they aren't the most attentive bunch. I usually just go up to the counter and ask for my check rather than asking for it from my table. Despite their lack of service, I will keep coming back due to their scrumptious food, and the cafe selling Mango Double Rainbow ice cream next door doesn't hurt either!

The food is pretty good but the atmosphere and service are really lacking. I suppose you can't really complain that much, because the prices are really pretty cheap. Where else can you get a fresh, piping hot Naan for $1.00? The food that we ordered for dinner came in no particular order. Actually, we had to wait a good 20 minutes for anything to come out, and they didn't serve us our Tandoori chicken until we reminded them to do so, twice. By that time we had already finished the rest of the meal. The naan was really fresh and tasted authentic. The roti was okay, but I preferred the Naan. The cauliflower and potatoes dish was very tasty. Portion sizes were quite fair for the price. The raita was not good, the pickles tasted awful(kind of fermented) to me, although it may be a classic Indian pickle taste that my palate is not used to. The main course dishes range in price from about $6-10. Definitely affordable. The atmosphere is not nice. The acoustic ceiling tiles are all yellowed due to the many years of soaking up grease from the cooking, and there are a couple of really suspicious looking ceiling fans up top there that seem like a safety hazard. The wooden club chairs looked like they were bought from a church sale from the 1970s for $1 apiece. The lights are bright and not inviting. Remember, that you get what you pay for. The food is very edible, the atmosphere lacks charm of any sort, and the service is terrible. This probably is due to the fact that they appear to have only two painfully overworked servers. Midway through our meal, a crazy drunk woman stumbled in wearing a dirty blouse, some skin tight spandex underpants, and a snarled wig. Her flabby, giant butt was a sight to behold. She started yelling at one of the customers and gesticulating, but after about 3 minutes she decided to turn around and stumbled back out into the street. Everybody in the restaurant seemed to take it in stride, but it was not a welcome addition to the dinner party. Don't go here if you want to impress anybody.

Just had the tandoori fish lunch plate ; consists of freshly tandoori baked fish, two 8 inch pieces of freshly baked naan, a generous amound ot basmati rice and a generous amount of lentils. All for $6.25. For this miniscule amount of cash, the food is quite decent.; not greasy , not oily : cuz it's Halal. Inexpensive and decent. You cannot get 4 star food for $6.25 , ok? Customer service: ok. Decor: indian kitchy paintings of doe eyed, buxom indian women . No indian beats today. 50 minutes to BART from montgomery station to 16th/mission, Eat and come back. My tummy Tiger is satisfied.

Good food. Bad service. I mean really bad. Waiter gave us one of our dishes but no rice. He gave the next table food but no utensils or plates to eat it. We had to ask for second refills on our water and then waited quite a while till the check came. Don't bother with this place. There are better places in town!

Great Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Makhani. I used to order delivery from this place all the time when I lived in the Mission. This place probably saved my life back when I used to be a heavy drinker and felt too lazy to cook dinner (which was quite often). I think I've only eaten in the restaurant once. I would kill for a joint like this in DC. Why can't some of you nice Pakistani Americans import this concept to DC. Are you listening Naan and Curry, Pakwan, Alhamra, etc? You could make buckets of money cuz NO ONE else is doing it here.

Hmmm, well not very good - food, service, vibe. FOOD: Chicken Boti Tikka - very tasty and tender - the best thing on the table Lamb Curry - 6 small chunks of lamb in a 1/2 inch of sauce - not worth it Raita - (yogurt / cucumber) OK, I found the 1/2 tooth pick size cucumber Nan (both garlic and onion) - tasted OLD Bindi Masala - (okra & other veggies) over cooked and over salted Basmati Rice - maybe they should cook their rice more than once a week SERVICE: I am pretty sure that our "waiter" was a zombie. Uttering high pitched grunts for yes and low pitched grunts for no. Asked a more complex question and got an unintelligible fast response. Once we were able to order - by pointing to the items in the menu, after ordering we were then ignored. Wanted the check so walking to the cashier station was the only way to get it. So, how did our adventure @ Alhamra begin ? ( I think they miss-spelled Alhambra ). Wanted Indian food, found a couple of joints in the Tenderloin ( Tikka Masala & Shalimar ), drive on over and one of the occupants in our car got scared ( it was maybe 7:30PM) on Ellis. Drove by Tikka Masala - not one table with customers. The street was like an urban war zone with one guy chasing another away from " his " street corner, while screaming into his cell phone. People shouting across the street at each other. Lots of folks milling around, some looking threatening. Ok, so we all agree lets head to the Mission and forage for Indian food, there was Alhamra. Joint was maybe 1/2 full ... a fairly good sign given the last one was deserted. Then followed the food/service experience noted above.

I recommend this place to everyone. To me, this is comfort food. It's definitely NOT something I can make at home or microwave in five minutes. The naan is always just right. The servings are PLENTY of food. My favorite is the lamb saag, but most of their dishes are just as good. Overall, not too spicy (hot), but you might ask and see what they can do for you. The people at Alhamra have always been nice to me, very accommodating (large groups, BYOB). I would never ding them for service. I would tell you, they have a MIRROR on one wall. So, half your dining party may have to watch themselves in the mirror while eating!! I don't mind, but it's a little distracting...

Guys this was not good :( The veggie samosas were ok I guess but the biryani was frozen at some point, I'm pretty sure, and the chicken curry I got was more than half oil. I know how much oil goes into curry! But it was not even a sauce. It was like, three chunks of chicken in a tangy oily bleh. This morning, my tummy hurts. We brought in a bottle of wine and they gave us a bottle-opener, which was nice.

The office and I get take out here once a week without fail. Highlights: Tandori Chicken Chicken Curry Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb Samosas & The Rice! I've eaten in as well and it's true the service could be better, but the food is so good that they could be insulting your grandmother and you'd STILL come back.

Also saw it on Check Please, but wasn't disappointed (had moderate expectations). It was 8 pm on a Sunday and I was relieved to see the place empty. The guys behind the counter and the server were friendly, though the latter seemed somewhat uninformed. But there's a great selection of vegetarian options. We had the garlic naan (very yummy, huge chunks of fresh garlic), the vegetable somosas (awesome - - huge, came out fresh, piping hot; chock full of yumminess), paneer tikka masala (they were really good about making it, although it's not listed on the menu), chicken curry and rice, and chutney. For the two of us, with the tax and tip included, it was only $28. Super good value. The flavors of the dishes are delightful with spices, but not overwhelming. The chutney was a little scant on the serving-size and a bit watery (better at Pakwan). Definitely not a disappointment. Clean, large, friendly, very reasonably priced, but not knock-your-socks-off delicious. I think Pakwan is just as good. The restaurant is also sorta quirky: you'll hear Mexican disco music through the wall, shared with the gay club Esta Noche, the lighting is damn bright, I love the Indian scenic murals on the walls and the huge placemats of beautiful Indian places. And, in the center of the back walls, there's a clock in a prominent place, and it has dogs as each of the 12 numbers. It was so random it could have been a Chinese restaurant. :-)

Their food is a bit on the bland side but tasty enough to re-order when feeling lazy and craving Indian type food. Lamb Sag, good if you add some salt Tandoori chicken, is great! Benghan Barta, is tasty Tikka Masala, good but better if you add some salt Garlic Naan, good Chutney, where's the flavor? Delivery service is pretty quick, always 30-45mins.

Not that anyone should be surprised, but the cockroach in my tikka masala was the final straw of this horrendous dining experience. The SF health department needs to take a hard look at this dump of a restaurant. To make matters worse, the owner shrugged it off when it was brought to his attention. No remorse, not a care in the world. Nor was a refund offered.

Me and my fam decided to come and eat here after passing by and remembering watching it on 'Check Please Bay Area'. We ordered the chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken leg, chicken biryani, tandoori prawn, and 3 naans. What can I say, my family loves poultry. What I love about this place was that the food was cooked right behind the counter so you could see everything being made and being brought over piping hot. Everything was really delicious and I was completely satisfied. I will definitely come back.

I've been 3 times in the last week, twice for lunch, once for dinner. It's a super convenient location and I really enjoy watching the employees cook by the window. I ordered dinner by phone and the food arrived within 20 minutes. Chicken tikka masala for the boyfriend, lamb sag for me and garlic nan for both! It hit the spot! The food isn't too spicy so I always ask for extra sauce. I'm determined to try all the lunch specials; lots of food for under $10. PERFECT! The mango lassi is a nice bonus!

Ordered delivery from here last night, the Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Sag with some Roti. Overall, the flavor of the food was pretty good, but the Chicken Tikka Masala was not very thick (which contrasts with a previous review which said that it was too rich, inconsistent perhaps?). Flavor was not bad, but I've had better Chicken Tikka Masala. What I thought was much better was the Lamb Sag. As other reviews have commented the spinach is very tasty and very fresh, so is the Lamb. I don't usually get this type of dish and was pleasantly surprised (definitely outdid the other one). The roti was not bad, but too flat and toasted for my taste. Unfortunately however, the food gave both my girlfriend and I terrible indigestion. Even in the morning, we are still feeling it. Because of the flavors, I didn't knock it down to 1 or 2 stars, but it was not an easy decision. 2.5 stars

The saag dishes and vegetable korma are excellent and they have huge somosas. Cheap prices - $6.50 for most vegetarian entrees. The meat looks good, but I have not tried. I like that it's not busy much b/c I usually eat here alone and don't feel uncomfortable at all about it. Don't pass this place just b/c it's so close to skeezy 16th Bart.

I'm in this restaurant eating my Tandoori Fish (Filet of sole fish marinated in spices and baked in tandoori oven) now as I'm writing this review. Not too busy here now during lunch. I think this place is underated for such good food.

This place is ok. The service is ok. Mostly, everything about this place is just sorta "ok" except the food. The chicken channa is delicious. Plus, naan is always good, no matter what. It's a good place to just sorta chill. If you call for pick up, usually the food is late, so no rush getting there to get it.

Ever since this Yelping stuff I've been compelled to be adventurous with food. I don't regret any restaurant choices so far, especially not this one. Man whatever with the people, you come here with a good group of people and what more do you need? Oh that's right, some chicken tikka masala, cheese naan, and some tandoori. The staff is real nice anyway, it just gets a little sketchy outside during nights. But hey, you want a quick food adventure to quench that spontaneous craving? This is the joint. Don't take my word for it though, gotta try it out yourself. Everyone got their own palate.

I go to Al Hamra all the time. It is the best value for Indian/Pakistani food in the city. Super cheap for dinner, and even cheaper with the lunch specials. Great Food. Especially the tandoori fish and chicken boti tikka (both served on hot plate), chicken or beef curry, sag paneer, and onion kulcha. Open late. Friendly family-run operation. Chains suck. If you go to Al Hamra, say hi to Ajaz. He's got the best smile. No corkage fee, yet they provide a wine opener & wine glasses. That rocks! No frills atmosphere, but there's a nice custom mural on the wall. If I had to find something negative to say, it would be that the naan sometimes gets delivered a few minutes after the first couple dishes arrive, but it's always yummy-fresh when it arrives - so no complaints here.

A strong craving for Indian and remembering seeing it on Check Please, I walked in and ordered $40 of food to go. The highlights of the take-out were the meats and especially the chicken. The naan was the most disappointing I've ever had and all other dishes were meh. As I sat there looking around waiting for my food to be prepared, I could not for the life of me understand 1) why they don't spruce up the dinning room and 2) why they don't get a beer/wine license. With their prime location and recent fame on CPBA, they could be making a killing. I guess the attention to any detail shows through from the room to the food.

What I am gonna right below is no exaggeration. Really. I had at least 400 (four hundred) lunch specials at Alhamra over the years. Bengan Bartha, Mutter Paner to be exact. I have their number on my speed dial, as I usually order for pick up. I took my future wife here for our first meal (kind of risky, though:). I bring every single person visiting SF for little something over there. Love their samosas, mango lassi, dal sag, but if it comes to eggplant... It's in own league, good luck finding anything comparable. 400 meals. Is there anything else I could write to be more convincing? Go and enjoy.

SKIP the chicken Koftka/meatballs. It cost 9 bucks and I got 3 small meatballs and a big plate of overly salty/inedible sauce. I had to order another dish just be full. Then I find out they have a lunch menu (at 1pm) that they never gave me. Instead of 7.99 for the lunch plate, I ended up paying 20 bucks for 3 meatballs, some mixed vegetables, rice and naan. Oh Alhambra...I've eaten there many times, but you've let me down.

I saw the restaurant on Check Please Bay Area and I was nearby, so I decided to try it. There is no sign to explain, and the lady at the counter gave no indication whether i should seat myself, order at the counter, or what. The people lingering in the doorway confused me. I stood up at the counter a long time, and the order lady was obviously avoiding eye contact. She was very hard to understand when eventually she asked me if I was done. Done with what? Okay. I asserted myself and ordered a lamb roll & mango lassi. I wouldn't even have known she took my order, except I read upside down what she wrote on the little paper. I held out my payment, and she turned away. This happened 3 times with me saying "do you want me to pay now?" Then I cleaned off a table for myself, and waited for my food hoping my meter wouldn't expire while I sat around starving and thirsty. About 20 min later, the food was plopped down in front of me. I swear I felt like a barnyard animal the way the employees fail to interact. My food was thrown down without so much as eye contact or a smile. The (spicy) lamb roll was just OK. I would like it better with a couple of veggies other than a sprinkle of onions in it. The mango lassi was yummy; I make those at home... I got the feeling that as a customer I was an inconvenience rather than an asset to their business. The service was slow, awkward, I had to ask for water, and my food was delivered with no silverware or napkin, so I had to get up and ask for that, too. It was definitely awkward. Come on, I realize they are ESL, but it's a restaurant, and all I tried to do was buy food from their menu, pay for it, and eat with a little dignity.

First of all--let me give credit where it is due: Their Nan is still pretty damned good. Now onto my complaints (and check my reviews--I'm not a complainer, this was unacceptable, really): Ordered last night from Grubhub. Have ordered from here before--everything that showed up was heavily subpar--I got the Chicken Sag and it looked like digested spinach that had a heavy dose of Ragu poured over the top. It tasted, well, bad. Really bad. They forgot items for delivery, so I called to let them know, and to ask if they could be brought by. The guy said this, in a very, very testy voice: "I'll check if they are missing. If they are, I'll send them out in an hour." and promptly hung up. I checked my grubhub order, and they, indeed, were there. It never arrived, at least yet (15 hours later). I sincerely and truly hope this slide isn't happening for everyone else, and I am willing to say that this may have been a one time deal. But last night's experience was entirely too bad for any restaurant manager or operator to let slide--or any customer to take.

I had naan and daal, just simple food. Was very good, freshly made and good flavor (very garlicky garlic naan, a plus in my book) And now unfortunately the bad: I got gruff for ordering only naan and daal. The server asked "is that it?" in the kind of tone that's supposed to make you feel like a cheap asshole. I'd have let this pass but then at the register, the same guy overcharged me and it was unlikely a mistake. I like the food, I like the prices (when they're correctly rung up) but I don't like the gruff

What happened to this place???!!! I went there today for Chicken Tikka Masala and Dal Saag, it was awful. I have never had more watery curries in all of my life. This is definitely unfortunate because this restaurant used to be one of my favorite places in the Mission. I guess I will have to drive a little farther to get decent curry at a place closer to Civic Center. So sad!

Normally waiting 1 hour and 40 minutes for my delivery would knock you down to just 1 star, so the fact that I gave these guys 2 stars says a lot. Simply put, it's pretty tasty. Not the best Indian food I've ever had, but still damn delicious. It's also cheap. Most things here are about 50% less than other places. If you're with a group of cheapskates and looking for Indian, this is the place. And the lamb samosas? For $3.99 you get two giant crispy treats stuffed with succulent greasy minced lamb. So wrong, yet so right.

Al Hamra prepares the best Chicken Tikka Masala. I usually order the tikka masala with garlic naan and go from there. The chicken is exquisitely cued and the sauce is great. The garlic naan is a plus, although it can really leave a nasty taste in your mouth for hours. Even though the restaurant is not so pleasant, I enjoy dining in because of the smell of the cooked chicken. The staff are ok, so service was just so-so. And just like the service the restroom upkeep was so-so as well.

We've started to get delivery a lot more from here. I think it's quite good. Our standards are chicken tandoori (breast), sag paneer, onion naan, and chicken tikka masala, and they've been pretty consistently good. We added tandoori lamb chops to the mix, and they were good too. I initially thought the masala sauce was too tomato-y, and it's not. I don't know whether it's changed or I have. I also really appreciate the lemon and onions that accompany the tandoori chicken (which, parenthetically, is always nicely cooked). They deliver to Potrero Hill from the Mission. That's great! I've read a few bad reviews from reviewers I like, and they are kind of old, so maybe there is some difference now. I also wasn't wild about the tikka masala when I wrote my first review, but we've done delivery 3 times recently, and each time, the product was good. The delivery guy is very sweet too!

The first time I went to Al Hamra in the Mission I was a medical resident. At the time, (as it is now) I was operating on a shoe-string budget and constantly sought out venues in my neighborhood where I could have a decent sit-down meal without having to go without electricity for a few days. As it turned out, my electricity was turned off for non-payment on several occasions, but it had nothing to do with this place. This non-descript restaurant in the mission was a later-comer to my rotation--mostly because there were several other restaurants in the area with similar menus that always seemed to be more crowded. One fateful day, unwilling to bear the crowds of these competitors, I wandered in, and my life was changed forever. Among my circle of friends, Al Hamra almost immediately emerged as our favorite Indian/Pakistani eatery in the city. What I cannot understand, is why this place does not get more attention. True, it could use some improvements with ambience, but what it lacks in ambiance it more than makes up for with sensational food. So what makes it so good? First, it is true that my parents, accustomed to the heavily spiced cuisine of their motherland, put chili-powder in my baby food. This meant that they wouldn't have dumb down their cooking for their American-raised french-fry loving son - so yes, I eventually found that french fries tasted better smothered with hot sauce. The end result of this child rearing experiment is my insatiable drive to find incendiary cusine. Anyone can make a dish spicy- but to make it spicy and bursting with flavor - that's a challenge. So first and foremost, Al Hamra is at the top of my list because they have this spicy-thing mastered. It took some time for us (i.e. me and the cooks) to trust one another, but once they finally realized my fire-eating abilities were legitimate they rose to the occasion. Now they spice my food without my having to ask. The chef makes his own hot sauce which he reserves for "special" customers like me and infuses it into the dishes I order with perfection But even for the more faint of heart, this place offers an array of dishes that are unparalleled in flavor. They make the best chicken tikka masala (CTM) in the city hands-down - and one can find a CTM on nearly every block in San Francisco- I've tried my fair share of them and there is no comparison. Someone once told me that one should never order a biryani for less than $20. The complexity of the dish requires so much preparation that a venue with good biryani would have to charge high prices just to offset the labor requirements of the dish. Al Hamra violates this rule- I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with my mouth watering after dreaming of their succulent lamb and chicken biryani --it's just so good. But where they really shine is their tandoori cuisine: their tandoori shrimp and fish are beyond description - so I won't even make the attempt. Beyond the food, the proprietors and his family who work there have always been welcoming and it is a joy to eat in their company. When I walk in, the owner shakes my hand an addresses me as "brother." There are many fine restaurants in San Francisco to be sure, but after eating in this one, your belly and your heart are full and content.

A yummy treat to have on special occasions I do recommend eating here it is the best Indian food you can find in San Francisco. Me and my friend split a big meal. Keema Naan nice and hot, Basmati really nothing I can say about that, Tandoori Combo Plate Best chicken I have ever had in the whole entire world, Tikka Masala excellent, Chicken Vindaloo overloaded with potatoes not chicken. Overall it was okay. See you next time Alhamra.

My partner and I have been coming here for years. One of our favorite places. We're here at least once a week. We grab a beer beforehand at the corner store and are set to go. The food is great - we love the veggie samosa, chicken boti tikka and the dal saag. You really can't go wrong with anything. The service is quick, the price is right and the staff is so nice. Love it!

My favorite Indian comfort food spot. Chicken biryani is to die for. The staff and owner are super friendly and ingredients are super fresh. It's like going to grandma's house for dinner.

Stumbled on the place on accident on a drunken night. It's a little misleading bc it says vegetarian on the outside but it actually has lots of meat dishes. We had the garlic naan which was amazing as well as the roti. Also ordered lamb and curry chicken which was excellent. Will def visit again for the great food and service.

By far my favorite Indian spot this side of the Mississippi. =) Pure Indian Mission Realness. Out of the 30+ occasions I've eaten here, I've left happy, full and smelling of curries (what Indian place doesn't leave you like this?) The tikka masala is incredible! Don't like naan hella crispy like I do? Make sure to tell these guys you "want them soft" - trust me, they'll be the chewiest motherfu&kers you've ever put in your mouth. Tikka Masala. Lamb Biryani. Malai Kofta. Rogan Jogan. 'nuff said.

Bad, bad, bad. Chick burnt, tikki watery. I have no idea how places like this get so many good reviews, I swear yelp is just sock puppets these days.

This is my to-go spot for cheap and quick Indian food in the Mission. The prices are extremely economical, and while nothing very special, the food is a tiny bit better than the other Indian spots in the immediate vicinity. I've tried most of the dishes on the menu, and they were all alright, but my favorites are the tandoori chicken and saag paneer, I have to admit, the ambiance is poor - run-down and dingy. The restaurant is rarely full, and I've never had to wait to be seated here. The staff is pretty inattentive - you will most likely have to flag someone down to get a water refill or go to the counter to get your check - but I don't mind the no-frills service at this price. They do not serve alcohol but let you bring in your own bottles (there is a liquor store a few doors down which sells 6-packs, single bottles of beer, and wine).

The food is good the service isn't! I went for lunch yesterday on a fairly slow day there were only three other tables there for lunch. My water arrived after my food which was strange. My food was prepared rather quickly but after it came out it was like the server forgot I was there. I had to chase them down for a to go box and to pay my bill. I will say that the food was good, not the best indian food I've every had but the prices were very reasonable. I had vegetable korma, chicken tikka masala, chai tea, rice and nann all for $19, and there was enough to make a second meal out of it later.

Taste varies greatly day to day, dish to dish. Today it was over spiced and tasted much like some street vendor in Deli, Mumbai or Singapore. We had veggie Samosas that tasted a bit stale and Chicken Sag that was spicy hot. The quality of the chicken was very good and tasty. The white rice was very good. The Masala Chai was supreb. And the price was a delight, too. We love the decor. The bathrooms could have been a bit cleaner. We'll be back.

We absolutely LOVE Al Hamra! So much, in fact, that it has become our Friday night ritual to order delivery. The lamb samosas are the best we've ever had and the Tandoori chicken is always juicy. Everything we've tried has been delicious. The best Indian, Pakistani food in San Francisco. Friendly, accurate, speedy service. Thank you, Al Hamra. We'll be placing another order very soon.

I just gave Pakwan down the street from this place two stars, but it is at least five times better than this. The curries are thin, soupy concoctions the quality of a TV dinner. Oliy, flavorless. But, worse than that is the atmosphere. When you can go in there any night of the week and find no more than two diners eating, take it as a valid warning. The place is dark (why bother replacing the lights when there's no one coming in?) and filthy. But worst is the service. Every time I have gone here they have taken no less than an HOUR to get my order done. That's with calling it in ahead. My last (and final) visit I saw the server/cashier continually check, rearrange and re-check the orders he was preparing. There was some homeless guy standing up at the front, crowding the counter, carrying on a meaningless conversation with the server. He would not get out of the way and the server had no clue how annoyed I was getting. I finally broke through and asked about my order, was told it would be another ten minutes (I called in half an hour earlier) paid and waited at an empty table. At one point the homeless guy casually started picking up bags from the counter and placing them on nearby tables, then rearranging them, saying nothing to me. I assumed they were his order, or that he had some plan. All the while I'm keeping eye contact with the server. After another fifteen minutes I stood up and asked about my order. He looked confused, looked at the homeless guy, who looked at me and said,"Oh, I put your order on your table!" with a big smile. Some dirty stranger non-employee handling my food and the employee can't be bothered to notice that I'm still sitting there the whole time. All this for the worst Indian food in San Francisco, and that's saying something.

For an Indian place, they definitely don't give very much food. One of our meat dishes literally had 6 quarter sized pieces of meat, which makes each piece roughly $2-3. Other than this there is not really anything notable about the food. The restaurant is set up somewhat strangely. There's a kitchen in the front and back of the restaurant and sometimes a chef would carry his skillet from one to the other. This is somewhat representative of the very laid back feel of this restaurant. Overall a strange restaurant layout and low price to quality ratio.

A colleague of mine took me here after I insisted on going to a trendy fusion Chinese place (which I understand is really good). BYOB, tasty Indian with significant heat, but not at the compromise of flavor. It reminded me of a place I ate at in London, the Pakistani Workman's Cafe. Would make a special trip to eat there again.

This place is a hidden gem. I don't care that their service can be really slow. Tiki masala and masala chicken is what's up! Really good food in a hole in the wall. Hell you can bing your own bottle too! They don't serve beer or wine but they will bring you a bottle opener before you ask.. And cause you were thinking about asking yea I'm saying no corkage fee. Food is bomb. I've been to Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi as my sister is adopted from India and I will vouch this spot is casual and legit! Don't bother if your in a rush they can't cater to you. Your too demanding. Just don't be afraid to stand up and go to the counter to pay. It's all family here and relaxed.

This place is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! My friend and I frequently go to Alhamra. The people are friendly and the food is excellent. I usually order Tandoori Fish or Chicken Boti Tikka. Both are best eaten there on the iron skillet so the onions can brown... So Good. The Aloo Nan or Roti (all the breads) are also things we order along with Aloo Gobhi, Bindi Masala, We like their vegetarian options. If you like spice the Chicken Biryani is awesome. We've enjoyed our visits to Alhamra and I'm sure you will too!

I watched the KQED review on TV and went on a late night Indian food run after the Giants game. The food was terrific! We have the tandoori chicken, lamb saag, garlic naan, and chicken tikki marsala. The service and the decor is very simple, but go for the food.

The food was quite good! I really enjoyed going there. Pakistani food is one of my very favorites. The tandoor chicken here was getting up to 5 Stars.... particularly tasty and juicy, well marinated. The desultory service was ok, the soccer game playing on the TV, it did not bother me. I ordered a soda, and the waiter forgot to bring it, oh well. I know what I like in a restaurant, but this might not be the place to go into that so much. I like passion about quality, attention to detail in presentation, careful preparation, and attentive but unobtrusive service. This place was good, just a normal restaurant with good food in one of the livlier parts of town. A little gritty in the locale, but so be it. I noticed that the other diners were also enjoying there meals. Recommended.
